Kandor

With the recession of the Great Blight after Tarmon Gai'don,  Kandor managed to rebuild despite significant losses. It was the Seanchan invasion that pressed through neighboring Saldaea and to the mountain fortresses of Chachin, however, that ravaged the nation and it's people. Not only did the Kandori lose most of their nobles, including the royal line, to war but also their capitol city. Queen Nynaeve of Malkier's sacrificial use of the One Power to save the remaining Borderlands from the invaders leveled the mountain city, save for the Aesdaishar Palace, and the Throne of Clouds within it, on the city's highest peak

The immense sacrifice of lives and land the Kandori and Saldaeans made prompted waves of Ogier stone-masons and Earth-talented channelers to aid their reconstruction efforts. Despite the Blight's relative calm during these years, Chachin was among the first of the battle scars to be healed, rather than risk a gap in the Border's defense.

Geography

Kandor is located to the east of Saldaea and is bordered by the Plain of Lances to the west, a tributary of the Erinin to the east and the Blight to the north.

Chachin is the capital city of Kandor. It is located on the junction of several trade routes, including the cross-Borderland route running from Bandar Eban to Fal Moran and another running south to Tar Valon. It is located just south of the Blight and as a result is extremely heavily defended, although it is large enough and far enough south that vigilance is not quite as severe as in smaller settlements such as Canluum. Since it's rebuilding after the Great Seanchan War, Chachin was returned to it's former glory and more. It is now considered one of the greatest cities in the Westlands, rivaling Caemlyn. Ogier-built buildings comprise the Merchant's District, now surrounding the lone peak, rising more than 5,000 feet over the city below,  the seat of the Aesdaishar Palace. The Palace is located on a cleared mountain-top and is a small settlement in itself, consisting of a complex of buildings, domes and towers, though many suffered severe damage due to the hammer blow of Power that leveled the city. It now stands empty, a monument to the war and the many lives lost. Painstaking reconstruction, predominantly by the Earth Legion, saw the city's natural defenses returned. Three tall ringwalls encircle the city with a 100-foot-wide drymoat located beyond that. Twenty-four bridges cross the moat, each overlooked by a small fortress where the bridge meets the city. The Bridge of Sunrise is located on the eastern side of the city, where the road from Canluum enters the city. As with many Borderland cities, Chachin is mostly made of stone buildings with glazed tile roofs that are more difficult to burn in a sneak attack. The poorest districts are nearest the edge of the city, within the first ringwall, with the districts becoming richer and more prosperous the closer a traveler comes to the central mountains.

Canluum is a small city located in the kingdom of Kandor, approximately fifty miles west of the border with Arafel on the main road to Chachin, capital of Kandor. Sprawling across several hills, it is defended by a thick wall and a dry moat fifty paces wide and ten deep, spanned by five stone bridges. The city itself mostly consists of stone or brick buildings. The city is wealthy, both for its location on one of the main trade routes to the capital and also for the gemstones mined from the surrounding hills. The city has a less savory area along the northern wall, a warren of narrow streets, small inns and shops called the Deeps, where cutpurses work. The Merchant's Guild holds an outpost here, on the highest hill.

Governance

Kandor was once a Monarchy, its ruler sitting upon the Throne of Clouds (rumored to be a male-powered ter'angreal that has power over the weather. With the war and the loss of nearly all of their nobility (and every royal), the country needed leadership.  The Kandori Merchants' Guild has always protected and furthered the financial interests of Kandor, and its members are known and respected across the continent. Unique in their ability to band together, while merchants in other countries are generally too protective of their independence and competitiveness to join forces in such a manner. That the Kandori do so may be indicative of their pragmatic Borderland attitude, putting the needs of the country and the Borderlands ahead of personal concerns. Those who remained of the Merchant's Guild increased their normal duties of seeing to the nation's financial needs to an all encompassing leadership. They brought much needed stability and a renewed prosperity to the country and so a plutocracy was born and continues to date. The Throne of Clouds remains empty, a monument to all Kandori.

Silver chains are used to indicate status among the Kandori merchants guild: In the Kandori merchants guild, three silver chains are the sign of a master merchant and lesser merchants wear thinner and fewer chains over their coats.

Domestic Affairs

Thanks to the leadership of the Guild, Kandor has returned to it's status as a prosperous nation. Participating in the trade of furs, fox skins being especially prized, and gems from Callum has helped fill coffers and allowed the rebuilding of a strong army. With most Kandori fit for fighting decimated between Tarmon Gai'don and the Seanchan War, young soldiers came from Arafel, Shienar and even several southern countries to fill the gap. Today it is still a common site to see Arafellin braids and bells or Shienaran top knots fighting on Kandor's Blight Border. Despite the peaceful nature of the Ogier, some of the younger generations have begun trickling out of the Stedding and taking up arms along men in defense against the Shadow.

Kandori can be easily recognized by the earrings, worn by both men and women, that can be  quite extravagant. Men wear their beards in a distinctive forked style, and  loose breeches seem to be worn by both men and women in the countryside (much as Birgitte wore), but women in the cities still generally opt for skirts.

International Relations

As a Borderland, Kandor is firmly allied with their neighbors, Saldaea and Arafel, as well as Malkier and Shienar further to the East. After the hardships the country has faced, they also have stronger than average ties to the Ogier, Caralain, and it's Black Tower. Trade along the Erinin through Tar Valon, Andor and Tear  fosters pleasant relationships with those nations as well.
