In one Age, called the Fourth Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Land of the Crystal Throne. It sped across the great Aryth Ocean to the Tai’Seanchan coast. It continued over the Mountains of Mist, picking up the scent of Two Rivers fine tabac and singing along to a tune made by a Tinker’s tea kettle. It swirled around the vast prairie known as the Caralain Grass, with it’s Black Tower fortress, and the island city of Tar Valon, home of the fabled Ogier-made White Tower...The wind swept through the valleys, skimming along the lake that once was Shadar Logoth, lifting the raven in flight. It howled through the Blight past the snorts and bellows of Trollocs, carrying on it the stench of their cookpots and rot as it whipped by a Myrddraal without creating so much as a ripple in its dark cloak. If you listen closely to the wind you can hear the sound of “friends” whispering in the dark as it whistles by you. The shadows beckon you to their warm embrace; where will the wind take you? For you must know, the wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was A beginning.
Saldaea
Saldaea, like many of the Borderlands, suffered great losses during the Last Battle. They lost even more to the Seanchan War mere decades later. Despite these setbacks, Saldaea has restored itself in the Fourth Age through the aid of its neighbors, the Ogier, Andor, and the Two Rivers. Today it is a young, prosperous nation, poised to stand in defense of the Westlands once more.
Geography
Saldaea is a Borderland nation prone to the bitterly cold weather of the rest of the Borderlands, but unique in that, despite existing along a coast, being well protected from the sea. The Banikhan Mountains and a series of islands and reefs make landing by sea a near impossibility.
Maradon is the capital of Saldaea, and though it was left in ruins by a siege just before the Last Battle it has been rebuilt in the Fourth Age to once more act as the beating heart of the nation. Situated on the River Arinelle, it connects the towns and cities of Saldaea by road and river. It is separated from the Blight border at the Mountains of Doom by the Proska Flats, a rocky, barren region.
Sidona situated along the River Arinelle south of the capital, is the home and holdings of House Rashai, as well as the center of Saldaea’s horse trade. Comprised of solidly built buildings that prize function over fashion, it reflects the local fashion of mercantile origins quite well.
Alirycas is a fortress town near the Blight, under the rule of House Aravell. Home to a large number of the Kin, as well as possessing strong ties to both Towers, it is a rock on which the Shadow breaks.
Tyr is located southwest of Maradon on the well-maintained highway to Bandar Eban. Merchants in this city often trade with the Domani, whose close ties to the Atha'an Miere mean they are the only importers of the highly prized Sea Folk porcelain in Saldaea. It is also the site of House Destine which is closely tied to House Bashere. Southern Saldaea is made up of dense forests and fertile fields, and many specialized carpenters and craftsmen reside in the small city.
Kayacun is a small town in Saldaea, notable primarily for the Queen’s Lance. This inn is home to a small stone column which memorializes the start of the Golden Crane’s ride to Tarmon Gai’don. It has become a popular site for visitors, particularly for warriors about to face battle.

Governance
Saldaea is a monarchy supported by a Council of Lords, with succession passing to the oldest heir regardless of whether it is a King or Queen. After Tarmon Gai’don, the royal line passed to Zarine ni Bashere t’Aybara, who stepped aside for her brother, Maedin. House Bashere continues to hold the throne, and with it enormous authority. Traditionally Bashere monarchs respect the input and insight of their Council, leading to a beneficial partnership.
Domestic Affairs
Saldaea’s ruling class is relatively young and inexperienced. The devastation resulting from the Last Battle and the Seanchan War eliminated many noble houses, leading to prominent common families being exalted to the nobility to replace them, including House Rashai. House Aravell is one of the oldest, but it remains largely insular in Saldaean affairs, content to guard their stretch of the border. As a result, even without the throne, House Bashere remains the most influential noble family. That said, as with most Borderlanders, politics are largely a secondary concern.
International Relations
Saldaea is closely tied to its fellow Borderlanders, of course, and to the Black Tower, who helped it rebuild following the Seanchan War. They are also very closely tied to Andor and Manetheren, with many Saldaeans feeling a debt of honor is owed for the assistance they received in the years after Tarmon Gai’don. They are also surprisingly close to the Tai’Seanchan, attributed to their joint efforts during the Seanchan War. On the opposite side, they have explicitly signed on to Malkier’s oath of vengeance against the Seanchan Empire for the devastation they brought to the Borderlands.
