In one Age, called the Fourth Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Land of the Crystal Throne. It sped across the great Aryth Ocean to the Tai’Seanchan coast. It continued over the Mountains of Mist, picking up the scent of Two Rivers fine tabac and singing along to a tune made by a Tinker’s tea kettle. It swirled around the vast prairie known as the Caralain Grass, with it’s Black Tower fortress, and the island city of Tar Valon, home of the fabled Ogier-made White Tower...The wind swept through the valleys, skimming along the lake that once was Shadar Logoth, lifting the raven in flight. It howled through the Blight past the snorts and bellows of Trollocs, carrying on it the stench of their cookpots and rot as it whipped by a Myrddraal without creating so much as a ripple in its dark cloak. If you listen closely to the wind you can hear the sound of “friends” whispering in the dark as it whistles by you. The shadows beckon you to their warm embrace; where will the wind take you? For you must know, the wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was A beginning.
the Kin
Alise Tenjile became the leader of the Kin in 1000 NE at the age of 181, and continues to retain the title of Eldest, even if there are kinswomen who are technically older than her.
Before the Last Battle, Alise rearched an agreement with the Crown of Andor, to stay in Caemlyn. They were to live in their residence for free in exchange for offering Healing and Traveling. The Kin would provide these services for a fee which would be given to the Crown.
It didn’t take long for other Nations to see the value in this and similar deals were made with the Kin over much of the Westlands. The Kin were provided free housing in every land partaking in the trade route, and the traveling or healing fee was to go to whichever nation the gateway was opened from.
Though anyone in the Kin can be called upon for these duties, many still retain their other trades and do not depend on their dealings with Nations.
The Knitting circle remains in Andor, but is no longer the 13 eldest members, instead it is made up of elected representatives from each Nation the Kin has public housing in.

Connections
The Kin have a good relationship with most Nations in the Westlands. Notable exceptions would be: Caralin, Mayne, Tai’Seanchan, and Far Madding. Surprisingly, despite their close ties, the Kin also have a subtly strained relationship with Tar Valon. Those are also the only nations in the Westlands where they do not have arrangements.
As the Kin has grown and began living in the open, they have become stronger as a group and feel that they should be equal to Aes Sedai. Realizing the Tower still feels differently after all these years, the Kin doesn’t voice this openly, but they are slowly attempting to accumulate their own circle of influence and power.
Many of the Kin take issue with Asha'man after the Tower War, but there are a few who see the Black Tower as a possible ally in their quest for more of a presence in the political sphere.
During the Reign of Moranna Trakand the Kin courted Andor for an alliance, but things did not progress far enough for details to be discussed. Instead, the Ice Queen took the advice of the Tower, at the urging of her grandmother, and split what some had been calling the Andorian Empire, significantly reducing their authority in the Westlands.

Relationship with the Aiel
The Aiel use the Kin's traveling network often, and the the two groups have a deep mutual respect for each other. The Wise Ones find Kinswomen preferable to Aes Sedai and Windfinders in many respects. They admire thier willingness to serve and humility.
Relationship with Seafolk
The Kin have no dealings with, and therefore no real relationship with the Atha'an Miere. The two groups rarely come into contact, but if they do there is a mutal respect, if little understanding between them.
Joining the Kin
If a woman is discovered to be able to channel and does not wish to become an Aes Sedai, it is possible for her to join the Kin instead. Women who are strong in the One Power are often strongly encouraged to travel to the Tower, but those who have families, or are too weak in the Source to test for the shawl, are given the option of joining the Kin to learn to control t heir abilities safely.
Aes Sedai are also given the option to retire to the Kin:
With an influx of new Aes Sedai, a progressive movement flourished under Amrylin, Saerin Asnobar, and fairly early into her reign it was finally agreed upon that Aes Sedai who wish to retire (usually around the age of 250+ years) could have the Three Oaths removed and be sent to the Kin. This was supported so strongly by the younger generation of channelers because they wanted older Aes Sedai to retire and give them the reigns, but officially their argument was who wants to give up half their life?
After 60 years, the practice has become fairly common, especially after Sharina Melloy retired to the Kin in 80 FA.
