Ouryn is a young, impoverished nobleman who was sent to the White Tower to become a Warder after his father lost everything. He is brave, noble, ambitious, crafty, and intelligent. He is ruled by chivalry but is occasionally prone to fall into amoral behavior. Ouryn has an adventurous, friendly, and humorous spirit. His motives are generally driven by a duty to the White Tower, making his sisters proud, sending them money, ensuring that the innocent people he encounters are always protected, and last, but not least, pursuing adventure. He can be an impressionable swashbuckler with a mild tendency to speak before he thinks. Yet Ouryn's good, kind heart helps to guide him and keeps him on the path of the Light.
Ouryn was born the second son of Lord Pan Mathagis and Lady Rinola Mathagis in Aringill, Andor within the hot summer of 89 FA. His family owned a predominant shipping company and were quite well off. Even though he had an older brother, Ouryn was made heir to his families company and lands. He was also expected to be a positive role model for his sisters and to help his parents with chores. He learned the trade by joining his father in the port and at the shipping company. His mother died giving birth to what should have been his second brother but both were unable to survive. Her loss was devastating to his father which would ultimately affect how he handled his family, business, and life. Ouryn was 11 when she passed and because his father became a gambling, whoring drunk; he essentially was taking care of his sisters. Despite Ouryn’s and Jon’s, Ouryn’s older brother, efforts to run the Mathagis Shipping Company, their youth and inexperience proved to be too great a challenge. A rival shipping company deceitfully tricked Pan, while drunk, into signing over the rights to Mathagis Shipping Company. After which, his family was quickly plunged into poverty. They would lose their lands within a year which would cause Jon to join the rival shipping company and abandon his family. Sadly, Ouryn’s father would take his own life only a few months later.
Left homeless and in charge of his two younger sisters at 15, Ouryn worked any odds and ends jobs he could find. They spent their nights in inns and taverns or under the stars as they made their way to Caemlyn. Ouryn figured he could find better work in the heart of Andor’s capital but it proved to be more challenging than he anticipated. Eventually, after nearly working himself to death still doing anything that put food in his sister’s mouths and shelter over their heads, Ouryn managed to negotiate them both jobs as maids. It was tedious work, especially since they’d never had to do servant work before but they eventually got the hang of it. Ouryn, on the other hand, was caught in a paid street fight but instead of being thrown in jail, the boy was sent to the White Tower to train and become a Warder.
Discipline was at first a struggle because even though he was now 17, after 2 years on the streets, Ouryn had forgotten some of his proper upbringing. But after a few punishments, he eventually fell into line and began to immerse himself completely into being a skilled fighter. He worked hard while he constantly pushed himself. He sent any money he could to his sisters.
As for Galvin Menethil, Master of the Yard, Ouryn learned fast that he was a patient man but also somewhat of a taskmaster. He worked the men hard but only so they would be the best that they could be. Ouryn appreciated the push, as he became very content in his position as a soldier of sorts. He’d always enjoyed stories of swashbuckling heroes in stories that his mother would read and now he felt he was living that life. And with each year that he grew older, Ouryn became more noble, brave, and driven by chivalry. He desires to be bonded by a Green Sister so that he can travel the world and fight glorious battles.

HISTORY
While he trained, Ouryn met and befriended a few of the other trainees. Included amongst them was the future First Prince of the Sword, Gareth Trakand. He almost felt ashamed of some of his lingering amoral behaviors as he got to know Gareth better. Even though the royal wasn’t much older, he had all the qualities one would expect and want to see in one of noble blood. It inspired Ouryn to become a better person as he aspired to be more like Gareth. Ouryn also became friends with a man named Raife Davoe whose benefactor was an Aes Sedai of the Yellow by the name of Yvaine Aldyr. It seemed odd to Ouryn the relationship between the two but at least Raife had someone looking out for him. Since his coming to the White Tower, he felt alone. He missed his sisters and his land. But that was a life he knew he would have to put behind him. Another trainee he made friends with was named Taivin Rashai. He was also of noble blood but unlike Ouryn’s family, his bred and sold horses. Ouryn was an uncoordinated rider so he often asked Taivin for instruction or would watch him intently as he rode. Though he’d never become the master in the saddle as Taivin was, Ouryn did work hard on his riding form to the point of becoming an adequate rider.
