Society! Cairhienin are: incredibly formal, incredibly divided by class, and structured around loyalty to House and the Great Game above much else. How much stays the same? How much has changed? My gut answer to both is not much, but perhaps some significant shifts in terms of class mobility. In the past, there were few avenues of advancement for common folk in Cairhien, but with a national military, the Academy, and perhaps trusted roles in the Great Houses, I could see avenues for advancement there. Thoughts?
NatGeo: Yes, I believe that with the introduction of the academy, there would be more social mobility in theory, but as always, the nobles always tend to have the best education and therefore they tend to be the ones who are able to get in
Kay: Yes, I mentioned that in Toria's bio and in the description I think. The general rule is that noble patronage is the determining factor in acceptance, but it's still an area where you might some some mobility
NatGeo: I'd say that Saighan would probably have done well, not at like to Elayne's level
and there would probably be some reversal back to the older days where the Game was more cutthroat
The Great Game, the Game of Houses!
Unlike my usual, I'm going to throw out some of our houses and relevant players, and see if we can spark some intrigue for them. I'm excluding Borderland nobility, because they don't put up with this nonsense. This is not a strict limit on who can participate or what we can plot, just so we know the (current) stage. More are always welcome! (And if I missed anyone, feel free to shout them out!)
House Taravain: Elaira - Kay
House Taborwin: Calina - Kay, but Viv and @angela when she returns
House Trakand: Ishara, Moranna, Talana, and Gareth - @✨Eve
House Damodred: Julian - @shai’tan
House Traemane: Adela - @angela
House Annallin: Ezrah - @setsoon
House Jarmide: Narendria - @will_Sedai
What are these Houses up to?! House Taravin is pretty quiet on most fronts, I'd think, as a prominent supporter of House Trakand, haha.
NatGeo
I'm curious to see what Damodred has
especially since they were passed over for the Cairheinin throne
Kay
Lots of members or those tangentially related went on to positions of power outside of Cairhien, but that's a good question. House Damodred would probably still be a force to be reckoned with
NatGeo
This is especially because Elayne was of Damondred descebnt
Kay
You had Elayne in Andor, Galad in Mayene, and Caraline in Tear, all of whom were monarchs or just as good
NatGeo
oh yes Caraline was from Damodred too HAHAHA
Kay
Barring any plots, the game of houses is all about the relative advantage, and it was most common in the south. I imagine it remains the game of choice in cairhien, relevant in Andor, probably not terribly common but around in Manetheren, and all over the bloody place in Tai’Seanchan
NatGeo
I think the Two Rivers has no patience for it lol
maybe in former Ghealdan
Kay
That was my thinking
It's not just the Two Rivers folk who'd be dealing with it
Summary:
Cairhien
Cairhien military! This is a throwback to a major plot thread of the original Turnings, a nationalized military (courtesy of @will_Sedai, I believe!) As part of Cairhien's fragmented and divided nature in the Third Age, its military was similarly divided under the auspices of various lords, who all marshaled and controlled their own smaller armies. However, I'd propose that during the intervening time, they're replaced by a national army; especially with a Trakand in charge during the Seanchan War, I feel like there would be enough time to set the stage and permanently change that area of Cairhienin society.
The monarchy! How powerful is House Saighan? How well did Lawcion and his successor manage in their goals to solidify power and bring stability to the country? I'm open to a few options, but I like the "They did pretty darn good the best," mostly because I have House Taborwin as a close ally of theirs in the backstory
Eve: I am for the nationalized military and previous to actually reading the line about a Trakand running it during the war, that’s exactly where my brain was at
And I think Lawcion did do well. I think Morgase would have made sure he knew how to play the game and he started out well with his choice to marry a Cairhien noble and fostering unity rather than descent by becoming Saighan rather than Trakand
Kay: That's largely where my mind went too. Obviously, it's Cairhien, so they probably aren't suuuuper united or anything, but between the necessity for unity after the war, the new monarch being taken into a Cairhienin house, likely some martyr sympathy for Elayne, I think we have a receipe for a mostly stable Cairhien in the fourth age

the specifics decided at our after party 7/9/2020:
Taborwin and Saighan push for the split with Andor. Then have Damodred and Riatin losing influence, Taborwin, Delovinde, Saighan rising with Saighan on the throne in a more scheming than loving marriage situation with Collette (daughter of Bertome Saighan) and Lawcion Trakand (son of Morgase), but their son is cool...and Damodred is trying to marry off their daughter to him to regain influence and Riatin is scheming with Delovinde who has drama with Taborwin surrounding the death of Dairin Delovinde.
