Weight: 158lbs.
Build/Complexion: Small framed yet muscled & toned/fair, almost pale
Eye/Hair Color: Green eyes/Dark brown hair
Distinguishing Features:
Raife was once a successful conman because of his warm, trusting face and charming smile. The man has dark brown hair that falls to the nape of his neck. And his eyes are deep, mesmerizing pools of emerald green. These gentle orbs resemble two almonds in shape. Raife’s face is oval-shaped with a broad, strong chin. He has a rounded yet firm and masculine jawline and a wide nose. His is a small mouth with thin lips often formed into a warm, charming, and irresistible smile. Raife also has an unblemished, unshaved face with a fair, almost pale complexion. In addition, he has shaped, low riding eyebrows and a thick, long neck.
This youthful rogue has an average-sized yet lithe frame that is well toned and muscular. His movements are graceful, fluid, quick, and flexible, much like a dancer’s. Raife is also capable of swift moves and impressive finger lifts, which come in handy even as a Warder. And despite his body size, he can hold his own against larger framed opponents due to his training at the White Tower. His chest is unshaven, and he doesn’t have any scars or tattoos. As for attire: He’s almost always wearing his Gleeman cloak and impeccable yet affordable and comfortable fashions in hues suitable to his skin tone. (Play-by: Joey Batey)
He is outgoing, charming, witty, flirtatious, humorous, and well aware of his many attributes: Raife possesses self-assured confidence. He seldom knows when to keep quiet or when not to flirt with others. But it’s all a part of his most extraordinary charm: His almost irrepressible good humor and friendliness. If you need a compliment, a song, or a joke, Raife’s your man. He can also be playful, sarcastic, and adventurous.
Additionally, Raife’s never afraid to show off his singing voice or demonstrate his skills playing the lyre, lute, and cittern, especially to those willing to pay. He is easy to approach and can put aside his feelings to listen to the troubles of others. There’s also a tremendous amount of vitality and energy to this rogue as there isn’t anything he wouldn’t try at least once. Many find him likable, making it relatively easy to obtain friends. Raife is also mischievous, crafty, and occasionally a trickster. He will rob a rich person blind before they’ve even realized whatever he’s taken is missing or thinking of associating him with the crime. But despite being a former thief, conman, and a very skilled liar, Raife isn’t cruel, vicious, or dangerous. For the most part, he is a good man who has experienced many hardships but has found a new purpose for his life since becoming Rymara’s Warder.
Yet underneath the assured exterior, hidden away from sight, still resides a man fearful of abandonment in every manner of the word. Whether that abandonment is purposeful or accidental, Raife struggles to connect with others fully. He also has terrible anxieties about death that trickle back to his youth. So he guards himself against any meaningful relationships or opening up to anyone since Kain’s demise. Raife isn’t nearly as ‘put together’ as he lets everyone believe, for he fears failure and being a disappointment, especially to Yvaine, the Aes Sedai who saved his life. She is about the only person he relies on and deeply loves. He considers her his ‘mother’ and often confides in her when he’s struggling. Though hiding his fears has become impossibly difficult for him since being bonded to Rymara. But through his time with her and Baz, he’s beginning to open himself up more and allowing a true friendship to grow with them both.
Raife Davoe was found as a baby within the reeds of the Erinin river by an Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah named Yvaine Aldyr. She’d come across him while she was traveling to the Borderlands. Yvaine believed that whoever left him there intended to drown him, so she decided to take him back to Tar Valon with her. There Yvaine became his Benefactor and as akin to a mother to him as an Aes Sedai could be. While being raised by servants who worked at the White Tower, he started as a relatively quiet, reserved boy who rarely spoke. But over time, he became less anxious and less stiff around others. By 10, Yvaine would secure Raife a position as a kitchen boy in the White Tower, to which he fulfilled the role with skill, hard work, and obedience. But he still had yet to open up to anyone or talk much unless acknowledging an order. Torin and Rinosa al’Ron, the couple who raised him, did their best to convince him to play with other children and be more receptive to others, but despite this advice, he still kept to himself. Unfortunately, it would take Raife until he was 12 for a whole new side to kick in. Suddenly Raife started to come out of his proverbial shell by becoming approachable and talkative. He was charming, friendly, comical, compassionate, and outgoing. It was as if a completely different boy had taken the place of his former shy, timid self.
At the same time as he started to ‘take wing,’ as it were, Yvaine landed him a new job tending horses as a groomsman. There she knew he’d have access to more boys of his age. He’d also learn more about the older teenagers and young men who trained to be Gaidin in this position. Raife loved caring for the horses near the practice yard, but he loved watching the trainees. He desired to become a Warder himself one day, a longing Yvaine was only too happy to foster. However, she believed that he could acquire a brighter future by remaining at the White Tower and becoming an Aes Sedai’s protector. So he continued to work with the horses, but she promised him that she’d help get him a position as a Gaidin Trainee once he was old enough. So when at last Raife turned 14, and old enough in Yvaine’s eyes, he joined the Gaidin Trainee’s. A much happier, eager, and more outgoing attitude grew forth from him as he worked hard to become as skilled at combat as he was capable of doing so.
He proved to be fast learning and attentive, and determined as a student with a good knack for swords and daggers. Raife continued to excel, growing as a skilled fighter and a far more confident, eloquent charmer. It also didn’t hurt that he was also shaping up to be quite the looker. So much so that some of the younger Green Ajah Sisters would sit watching him practice arguing over who would bond him. Unfortunately for them, Raife was still a touch too young and not yet adequately trained.
As a trainee, he made quite a few friends amongst the other young men, including the 1st Prince of the Sword Gareth Trakand and a Saldaean youth named Taivin Rashai. Gareth and Taivin were both only two years younger than Raife. And though Gareth was royalty, he was quite an easy-going, kind, friendly youth, while Taivin was also noble yet behaved with a more reserved attitude than Gareth. They both were far more down to earth than he expected them to be, and the three became friends. He often convinced Taivin to give in to his reckless side while both of them conned Gareth to do the same. They shared in many fun ‘activities’ together and in many chores together when they got caught. Still, it was always worth the punishments in the end.
Raife also became very close with another Trainee named Kain Fonolin. Kain was the same age as Raife and promised to become a Warder of a Green Sister named Avenya Norenne, his cousin. But Kain wasn’t quite ready to bond, so he and Raife became very best friends while he continued to train. Raife confided to Kain about his fears of abandonment and why he hardly ever spoke as a child. Although his friendships with Gareth and Taivin were strong, they couldn’t compare to the even tighter bond with Kain, which would later come to a sad conclusion and change the course of Raife’s life.
When he and Kain were 20, they were finally properly trained and ready to bond. Avenya, the Green Aes Sedai who bonded Kain, also desired Raife to be her Warder, so the trio traveled to Saldaea together. They fought against trollocs while Avenya and Raife assessed if they would be a good fit together. During a raid, while in the heat of battle, Avenya would die, causing Kain to fill with a drive to avenge her death and end his life in the process. He started to take on trolloc after trolloc, much to Raife’s concern. Though he knew well the outcome of Warder’s after their Aes Sedai dies, he couldn’t let his dearest and most faithful friend perish. In an attempt to step between Kain and a trolloc, Raife inadvertently received a nasty blow from Kain. If it hadn’t been for the Yellow Aes Sedai stationed there, Raife would have died. After being healed, he would come to rather quickly only to learn that Kain was dead. The loss of his best friend devastated him beyond words, enough so that Raife decided he no longer desired to become a Warder. After a brief visit back at the White Tower and a polite conversation with the Amrylin, Raife left behind that life in pursuit of a new one.
The young man would find, or so he thought, his calling by becoming a Gleeman. Yvaine had once told him that he possessed an incredible, soothing, and deep singing voice. So with it, he began to travel around the Central Lands, performing in various places. He survived happily off of the coin he made or the place to sleep, meals, and drink Raife received, but mostly he enjoyed the freedom to go where he pleased. Though Raife would practice his combat skills in his spare time to keep himself keen on the off chance that he may need those skills to survive. While he traveled, Raife learned how to play the cittern and the flute from other Gleeman. It took him a few years to be good enough at playing them in his performances, but it increased his prestige and the coin he gained once he began to use them. And although meeting new people, venturing to new places, and doing as he wanted was exciting, Raife was lonely. So he began picking-pocking, pulling larger thievery jobs, and seeking out more thrilling escapades. For better or worse, he found a partner in crime instead.
At 25, Raife would cross paths with Toria Netari, an Illianer. The two hit it off quickly, discovering that he was the yin to her yang and vice versa. They met one night when they were attempting to break into the same shop in Baerlon. Their partnership began that very same night after a long conversation and a decision to keep up the pretense of only being Gleeman. The pair complemented each other perfectly. He was the charmer, and she was the planner. She came up with the schemes, and his social skills were keen on their success rate. Their relationship soon started to bud into something more as the years passed, and they became pretty intimate with each other. Though neither of them would put any label on their relationship... They were partners, nothing more. And the two were partners for five years, swindling anyone with a big purse or prized belongings worth taking before quickly moving on.
But after they pulled a job in 112 FA, Raife got separated from Toria in their escape. When he reached their agreed meeting spot, she never showed up. So he started to worry about what had happened and searched for her. But he’d find out that soldiers captured a woman fitting Toria’s description with stolen goods, and they hung her for her crimes. When he visited the prison, they bequeathed Raife with her personal items. They were all indeed Toria’s, including her hat. The man was devastated. He blamed himself for her capture, chastising himself for getting separated from her. If he’d stayed with her, perhaps she’d still be alive. So Raife drowned his sorrow in drink and songs of lost loves. Or he did until Yvaine found him proclaiming she found his birth family in Sidona, Saldaea. With Toria gone, the Gleeman had no purpose for his life, so he journeyed to Sidona to meet his family.
For the remainder of 112 FA and the majority of 113 FA, Raife stayed with his family. He became acquainted with his parents and siblings while he received more training in horseback riding. It was a happy life and a good one, but Raife still felt as if there was something was missing. He still lacked purpose. He wasn’t a horse trainer or breeder, and he had no desire to be either. So he began pursuing his Gleeman career once more while staying near his family. During one of his performances, Raife defended a barmaid groped by a patron who started to hurt her in his roughness. He took the man on with his sword and skillfully unarmed him before handing him over to the authorities. Well, his display of chivalry caught the attention of a Blue Aes Sedai named Rymara Orelaev. She was impressed by his skill with a blade and how he attended to the woman after everything to make sure she was alright. Although she already had one Warder, she wouldn’t mind having two men protecting her and offering him the option to be bonded with her. Without really giving such a colossal decision considerable thought, Raife agreed. She reminded him of Toria and how lost he’d been since her death. Not to mention, being her Warder would bring him back to the Tower where he could be closer to Yvaine. So far, becoming Rymara’s second Warder has been beneficial to Raife and has proven to be his previously missing purpose. He has gained friendship with her and Baz, even if the man would disagree, and is finding happiness once more.
