Ranai likes to do things by the book. She wants to be brave and brash, but she clings to rules and the safety they bring. She is obsessed with Moiraine Damodred and wants to grow up to be exactly like her. She believes Moiraine Sedai to be the bravest woman alive and desperately wants to find that braveness in herself. Coming from the borderlands, the fear inside of her is a source of deep shame.
Her brother is an officer in the Saldaean army and she is very proud of him. He was her first idol, and she still looks up to him a great deal. What little she knows about the sword, she learned from watching him. They used to wrestle as well, and practice hand to hand combat together. He gave her the kesiera she wears the day before she left for the White Tower.
Her relationship with her sister is strained. Rania was the baby and felt like her older sister was jealous of her. She feels Selena to be dramatic, immature, and hungry for attention. Selena was always too wrapped up in trying to get everyone to notice her to notice her little sister. Ranai left for the tower while Selena was traveling with her show and the two barely know each other.
Her relationship with her parents has weakened since her sister ran away and will continue to weaken as they grow apart.
Ranai took to novice life more easily than many. She has a strong sense of honor and does her best to make her family proud. It hasn't fully hit her yet that the Tower is her new family. She respects all the Aes Sedai, and though she needs instruction on how to complete chores she had never done before coming to the Tower, she does try her hardest. She greatly respects and admires the Mistress of Novices and is one of the few Novices who has spent time with her warder.
Ranai is very good at keeping her emotions under check, but she still has very strong feelings, even if she doesn't always express them. She isn't one to desire to get the last word in, and will bite her tongue just to keep the peace.
Ranai was born in the winter of 97 FA to the Lord of Tyr, Rhoul Destine, and his wife Morgena, a fiery redhead, with a fiery temper to match. She was the youngest of their three children, the eldest is her brother Emmyt, and the middle child is her sister Selena. Selena took after their mother and Emmyt was much more like their father. Ranai did her best to act like her father, but her temper flared up often, just below the surface. To help keep her feelings under control, Ranai turned to sports and rode almost every clear skied day on her favorite horse, Buttercup. She urged her sister to join her at times and it was one of the few things the two did together before Selena left. Her sister would tell her stories while they rode and Ranai's favorites were always about the hero who won Tarmon Gai'don, especially Moiraine Sedai, who supposedly lived in the borderlands herself now, but was in seclusion and no one had seen or heard from her for years.
Ranai was also a fan of archery and practiced often. On her 13th naming day her brother had even taken her hunting with him, and she managed to shoot a boar from her horse. Her arrow did not take it down, but her brother helped her stalk the wounded beast and finished it off for her. It was a wonderful day, and one of the last times she got to spend an entire day with just her brother. Emmyt is eight years her senior and was promoted to an officer shortly after that, giving him significantly less free time to spend with his littlest sister.
The next year was when Selena ran away and the hole it left in their family was deeply felt. Selena was the troublemaker, the loud one, and without her, things were much too quiet. For her part, Ranai was silently furious. She felt that her sister was deserting her and didn't understand why she was throwing away her family and her future. Ranai was usually seen as one of the guys, and got along with members of the opposite sex well enough as friends, but had never felt any romantic stirrings of her own. She felt definitively sure though, that even if she had, she still wouldn't understand her crazy sister. Her best friend was a boy named Thomas, and he claimed to be as baffled by this behavior as she was.
Her parents clearly missed their middle child, but showed it in vastly different ways. Her father became more withdrawn and preoccupied with work, while her mother changed from fits of weeping to fits of breaking things and screaming, often many times in a single day. Ranai felt like she was walking on eggshells in her own house. Emmyt came over when he could, but for the most part, it was just Ranai and Morgena. Her mother would rage at her for the tiniest infractions and Ranai became a very neat and tidy person to avoid such confrontations.
Ranai and her friends would sometimes spend all day on long horseback rides, just to keep out of the house. When her group of friends' parents took them for testing to see if she could learn to channel, Ranai was allowed to join them, and she and one other were ecstatic to find that they both had the ability to learn. The two had a joint party that very night to celebrate as well as say their goodbyes. To Ranai, it almost seemed as though her parents were relieved to see her go, as neither seemed to have the time or energy for her anymore. Her brother on the other hand, seemed to swell with pride. He made a bigger fuss over it than of his own accomplishments and he bought her a special present, a kesiera, like her favorite Aes Sedai was known to wear. The one he bought was much more ornate however, and had white stones hanging from it instead of blue. Thomas gave Ranai a gift as well, a small bird he had carved out of wood and painted.
Ranai and her friend Iralle traveled to the tower together, but things were different between them now. More specifically, Iralle was different. She was wearing much more revealing clothes and kept responding to everything Ranai said with sighs and eyerolls, occasionally commenting on how wonderful it was to be leaving childish things behind, and how they were "women" now. Ranai didn't feel any more grown up than she had a week ago, but didn't say that to Iralle. She had been excited at first to be going to the White Tower with someone she knew, but they had never been the closest in their friends group, and this experience didn't seem to be improving that.
They signed their names to the Novice Book and began their training. Shortly after their enrollment, the Black Tower delegation was due to arrive and Ranai helped with the preparations, though she did not attend the ceremony or even catch so much as a glimpse of a black coat. She did however, have a very interesting encounter with the Mistress of Novices. After scolding her that day, Ranai was sure she was being sent to the Aes Sedai's office for punishment that night when she was summoned, but instead she got a wonderful surprise. Avyanna Sedai had arranged for her to take a sword lesson with the Master of the Yard himself. The MoN had noted her rapidly paling complexion and thought it would be beneficial to Ranai's studies if she spent more time out doors. She said she understood that some people learned better while they were being active and wanted to do everything she could to help Ranai reach her full potential.
