The line of bright light cast sharp shadows across the entire room, every man within the chamber squinted as the light expanded into a looming gateway shimmering at the heart of the room. Valen watched as his brothers filtered through the gateway, holding the weaves firmly. Seven Asha’man of the Water Legion and five Dedicated for the exchange program, the Asha’man of the Water Legion would join the Dedicated within the White Tower for a time and four Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah would return to the Black Tower with Valen. The last two men to enter the gateway were two of his students, men who were not only strong channellers but also exceptional warriors in their own right and it was their duty to help Valen protect the Aes Sedai as they returned to the White Tower. As a part of the agreement they could not Travel all the way to Tar Valon, the Aes Sedai did not trust the new M’hael or his commanders yet which came as little surprise given the lifespan of a channeller and the Tower war, the wounds were still fresh. No, Valen would travel to Dumai’s Well where they would then ride to Tar Valon with a small escort, two Red sisters and a Green, to the outskirts of Tar Valon. Valen would not enter the city, not this time, but instead their escort would take the Asha’man and Dedicated to the White Tower and return with the promised Yellow Sisters.
And so he stepped through the doorway of pure light, emerging a mile from Dumai’s Wells where the Aes Sedai waited with the horses. The ride to Tar Valon was largely uneventful, the Sisters watched the Asha’man warily and the soldiers who rode with them encircled them as if it would stop Valen and his men if they wished to do harm.
It did not take them long to ride from Dumai’s Wells to Tar Valon and soon the White Tower pierced the heavens before them like an ivory needle. The party rode until they reached the first bridge into the city and that was where the brothers parted ways, Valen clasped each man by the wrist and thanked them for their participation, he clapped each Dedicated on the shoulder with a stony expression and wished them good luck with their training then they parted ways. Valen and his two companions waited with their horses outside the city watching throngs of people weave their way through the gates, some dragging carts of food or building supplies while overs walked beside a donkey or with just the clothes upon their back, he watched them carefully all the same. Almost two hours seemed to grind by as the trio of Asha’man waited, grooms came and went with assurances that they were sent by the Sisters, that they would be able to leave soon and then they were left to wait a while longer. Of course, the Aes Sedai would be concerned with their guests before sending their contingent and he expected as much but all the same he had hoped for more urgency and haste. They would have to make camp for the night at least, after all they had agreed that they would not Travel, and continue on to the Black Tower the next day. Waiting left Valen to ponder on matters and so by the time the Sisters emerged from the city, crossing the bridge towards them, Valen was sat upon the flagstones at the edge of the road meditating calmly as his men watched over him, each bowing their heads as the Aes Sedai approached them before Valen opened his eyes, rising to his feet like an uncoiling serpent.
And then he bowed, deeper than his brothers as a sign of respect because he needed them and his brothers needed them ”I am Valen, the Baijan'm'hael, I am honoured to meet you,” his voice rumbled like gravel sliding over the earth.
