Aiel

The Aiel, perhaps more than any other nation, were indeed broken by the Dragon Reborn. Their Car'a'carn forced them to confront themselves and to accept a place in the world outside of the Threefold Land. It was time for their long punishment to end, and to accept change that was, at times uncomfortable. Today, the Aiel serve as the keepers of the Dragon's Peace, playing a prominent role in the affairs of the Westlands. They remain a people who prefer to remain separate, but their honor dictated they take a different path. Despite fierce losses to the Seanchan, and again during the Tower War, they stand strong as the spear arm of the Dragon Compact.

Geography

The Aiel Waste, known to the Aiel as the Threefold Land, remains their homeland in the Fourth Age. It is a desolate region to the east of the Westlands, barely habitable, and completely uninhabitable to any save the Aiel. However, despite the inhospitable terrain, life thrives within the Waste, around Rhuidean. The Aiel also have a presence that stretches throughout the entirety of the Dragon Compact, often through small, organized groups of warrior societies working to preserve the Dragon's Peace.

Rhuidean is the only city of the Aiel, what amounts to their capital, and the easternmost jewel of the Westlands. Home to ancient histories closely guarded by the Aiel Wise Ones, plentiful water and crops, the major headquarters for each of the warrior societies, and a world library constructed and available to all who wish to study there. Rhuidean is open to outsiders, though difficult to reach except by traveling and closely policed by the Cor Darei.

Domestic Affairs

Despite the terrible violence of Tarmon Gai'don, the Seanchan War, and the Tower War, along with terrible prophecies passed down by Aviendha involving the destruction of the Aiel, they have managed to weather the storm. It has not, however, been an easy transition. The slow decline of the clans, the urban and safe lifestyle of Rhuidean, the rising prominence of the Dragon Blooded, and other radical changes to the Aiel way have life have shaken the fabric of Aiel society and driven away some of those most disaffected. The Shaido have absorbed some Aiel who could not bear the changes, as have the Mera'din. Both groups splintered away from the Aiel during the tumultuous end of the Third Age and eke out a living in the Aiel Waste, separate from the Compact and Rhuidean, and occasionally disaffected Aiel find their way to one group or another.

International Relations

The Aiel are both integral to and separate from the other nations of the Dragon Compact. Centuries of isolation have not melted away overnight, even as they have become integrated more closely to the nations of the Westlands. As a result, they are held at arms length by most, though few would refuse them entry or their assistance. Andor is perhaps their closest direct ally, as the shared losses of Queen Elayne Trakand and Aviendha cemented a longlasting tie between the two peoples.

The Aiel use the Kin's traveling network often, and the the two groups have a deep mutual respect for each other. The Wise Ones find Kinswomen preferable to Aes Sedai and Windfinders in many respects. They admire thier willingness to serve and humility.

Relations are also particularly close with their Borderland neighbors, who find common ground culturally.

The Wise Ones have an agreement with the Aes Sedai and the Windfinders where they exchange students for a period of 6 months. It is agreed that for every two Accepted who leave, two Wise One apprentices, and two Sea Folk apprentices will be exchanged.

Relations remain strained with Cairhien, though this continues to improve as the years pass and memories fade.

Fresher and more dangerous by far is the memory of the Black Tower's betrayal. The Black Tower earned close relations with the Aiel through the initial training of the Dragon Blooded, but the breach of the Dragon's Peace shook their ties to the core, particularly given the Aiel's lingering regret for how long it took them to intervene. They no longer excahnge trainess with each other.

Societies

Wise Ones - They decide who needs to be helped and or put in line to keep the Dragon's Peace.

Chiefs - They can be raised from any society except for the Maidens. While the Wise Ones decide what needs to be done, the chiefs are the ones responsible for how.

Dragon Blooded - They are the male channelers of the Aiel. They are positioned mostly in the Northern Westlands, focusing on the Black Tower and the Borderlands. They have delved into the creation of Power-wrought items, including spears and other, rarer weaponry.

Aethan Dor (Red Shields) - Specialize in tracking down people of interest to the Aiel.

Cor Darei (Night Spears) - Guardians of Rhuidean.

Duadhe Mahdi'in (Water Seekers) - This society cares for the other Aiel societies and can be found throughout the Westlands and in Rhuidean.

Far Aldazar Din (Brothers of the Eagle) - They are used as scouts and investigators all over the Westlands.

Far Dareis Mai (Maidens of the Spear) - An all female society, they are are the only society that accepts women. They are investigators and interrogaters.

Hama N'dore (Mountain Dancers) - Stationed mostly in the borderlands, they help defend against the Blight.

Sovin Nai (Knife Hands) - They can be found on the Southern Coast of the Westlands for the most part, keeping an eye on things there.

Tain Shari (True Bloods) - They are very secretive about what their specific purpose is. They do, however, excel at many things, they will scout, they Dance well, but many, particularly the newer members seem to have a need to prove themselves to the other warrior societies, as good warriors.

Meradin

They believe themselves to be the only "true Aiel" living in the more desolate stretches of the Waste near the Termool. They keep the old ways and customs, believing other Aiel to be soft like Wetlanders.

Shaido

Unable to bring themselves to rejoin their societies, they live in the outskirts of the Waste near The Great Rift and occasionally raid the Meradin or even venture West to raid Rhuidean and Mayne.
