Murandy

The people of Murandy, much like the people of Altara, do not really consider themselves the residents of a nation. They are more likely to claim allegiance to one or another of the local Robber Barons.

Geography

Murandy is a small nation located in hilly countryside with much larger neighbors on three sides. To the north is Andor, to the east is Far Madding, to the south is Illian, and to the west is the River Manetherendrelle.

Lugard: The capital city of Lugard is located in central Murandy, and trade there always flourishes, regardless of whatever political upheaval may be engulfing the city or nation; it is this trade which keeps the city alive. It is one of few cities in the world which has more inns and stables than residences and shops. Lugard was once surrounded by a tall stone wall, but it has since crumbled. The many thieves who call Lugard home consider any foreigner a fair mark, and the unpaved roads and alleys are dangerous to travel alone. Located on the River Reisendrelle where it joins the River Storn in the heart of Murandy. The Jehannah Road runs west to Jehannah. The Silver Road runs south to Illian. The Lugard Road runs northeast through Four Kings and on to Caemlyn; the roadway running southwest through Altara is also known as the Lugard Road. The eastern gate of Lugard is the Shilene Gate. Lugard is a dirty city, dusty and noisy, its gray outer walls in a state of disrepair and its inner stone walls in worse shape. Many of its broad roads are unpaved, despite the flourishing trade that brings scores of wagons trafficking through--from Illian, Ebou Dar, Ghealdan, and Andor. Houses, shops, and inns all are of gray stone and roofed in blue, red, purple or green tiles but those bright colors are covered with a dull haze of dirt. Lugard has a well earned reputation not only for commerce but for thievery and licentiousness as well. Outsiders are well advised to heed the Lugarder saying: "Trust no one but your self, and yourself not too much." Taverns and common rooms in inns are judged by some to be bawdier than most.**

Governance

Traditionally a monarchy, the Murandian throne held sway in Lugard, if that. It's only real purpose was to deter any other nations from invading. After King Roedran Almaric do Arreloa a'Naloy's machinations leading up to the Last Battle, the various Murandian nobility was all united beneath the crown. His successor was a firm handed and successful ruler after him. The third generation, however, was weak and quickly lost any real power to the various bands of outlaws headed by a handful of leaders. These leaders have been termed "robber barons" by outsiders, simply the Barons within the organizations. Now the Barons rule trade and the majority of Murandy via figurehead nobles.

Domestic Affairs

Murandy has always been a hot-bed for less than savory activities and those that profit from them. When the monarchy failed, the remaining nobility bought up thieves, assassins, and footpads to try and gain the upper-hand in their quest to gain the crown and, more importantly, control of Lugard's trade. Before long, the Barons became the true power, using the various noble lords and ladies as a smoke screen from which to run their empires behind.

International Relations

Murandy, specifically Lugard, is an overland hub for trade with routes to Illian, Jehannah, Far Madding, and Caemlyn by way of Four Kings. As such, despite their less than favorable reputation, trade continues to flow through Lugard and fill Baron's purses... one way or another.

The long-standing rivalry with their large neighbor to the north has hardly cooled over the past century. The Hills of Kintara were claimed by Queen Moranna in the early 40's FA. While this is within the letter of the law under the Dragon's Peace, the result is Andoran lands both to the north and east of smaller Murandy. While this met with little resistance at the time, the Barons have used the perceived Andoran threat as a coercion tactic to strong arm nobles and citizens alike to join their cause.

Their other neighbor, scattered and shattered Altara, is often looked at in a more predatory light, with individual Barons considering possible areas for foreign expansion with regularity.
