Name: Kis Riatin
Age: 67
DOB: 46 FA
Nationality: Cairhien
Place of Birth: Cairhien
Place of Residence: Cairhien
Affiliation: House Riatin
Rank/Title: High Seat of House Riatin
One Power Strength:
N/A
Talents:
He has aged very well...
Weapon Skills:
Martial: 2 | Hand-Held: 5 | Stave: 0 | Thrown: 4 | Ranged: 7 | Mounted: 0
While he was once a sharpshooter with the bow, Kis' declining years have taken a toll and his hands are not quite as steady or as strong as they once were.
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 160 lbs
Build/Complexion: Though fit and solid in his younger years, Kis is somewhat pudgier and softer than he used to be. His skin is fair and decorated with only a few small scars.
Eye/Hair Color: Dark eyes with thinning hair that is more gray than brown.
Distinguishing Features:
Kis is usually seen with a drink in one hand, and a smoke in the other...and often with his arm(s) around the nearest attractive female(s). He wears fine fabrics with his shirts slashed in his house colors. Tall for a Cairhien, he uses his height to make his shorter brethren feel uncomfortable.
Kis is confident, crude, irreverent, and stubborn. He elicits either love or hatred from everyone he meets – no one is left without an opinion. While he’s usually sunny and utterly sure of his own importance, Kis is fearful of growing older, though he only admits this to his closest friend (Seden Brith). He finds that the sharp wits that have steered him through his whole life are slowly beginning to disappear. He spent most of his life as an indomitable force, and cannot see himself as anything less than that. He still rides his fame as the mere mention of his name strikes awe in nearly everyone he meets. In fact, Kis frequently repeats his own name over and over again throughout conversations and often punctuates his statements with an exclamatory announcement of his own name. He claims this eccentricity is because people can’t believe they are in the same room as the legendary Kis Riatin, and so he has to remind them.
The truth is that he says his own name often to remind himself of what it is, though it is a truth he would never admit, even to himself. He believes that his name is also an inoculation against failure - that the mere mention of the two words, "Kis Riatin," will send his opponents running scared - and his bold moves within the game of Daes Dae'mar seem to support a belief in his own immunity to failure. Sadly though, he is beginning to forget things. He makes up for this decline by becoming even more eccentric than usual.
A legend in his own time, who has perhaps lived past his time, and now, in his declining years, must face the reality that he can no longer live up to the legendary persona he has sculpted for himself, Kis is desperately attempting to cling to relevance. He leads the lifestyle of a much younger man and can be counted on to consistently carouse and womanize. Unapologetic, prone to sexual harassment, and happy to shoot someone to solve his problems, this aging nobleman is starting to become a liability to his house.
Kis is self-obsessed and egomaniacal, seeking to continue to propagate his own myth by his actions, to "go out with a bang." His biggest fear is that in time, he will not only forget himself but also be forgotten by everyone else.
Kis had a fairly happy childhood. He was the only child of Prestin and Revel Riatin, who were overjoyed at the birth of their son after years of trying. His father was often consumed by the stresses of living up to his predecessor, but Kis' mother had all the time in the world for him. She doted on her son, and spoiled him, not completely, but quite a bit. His mother taught Kis about Daes Dae'mar along side his letters and arithmetic. She was a skilled player and had taken over being the brains behind their house before her miracle baby was born. At first, Prestin had been glad his wife had handed over the reigns back to him. There had been times he wasn't sure her intentions were centered on benefiting the family over her own personal interests. It didn't take long, however, for him to feel as in over his head as he had before their marriage. Determined to prove himself, he often neglected his family, which they seemed to be fine with.
When Kis was ten years old he fell off a horse and broke his leg. It was healed by an Aes Sedai, but the pain and fear during that accident never left him and he is still afraid of horses to this day. His mother died in his adolescence when he was 13, and he became depressed, but always tried to hide it behind humor. His father attempted to be supportive, but Kis pushed him away, feeling it was too little too late. He began spending time with his father's guards and found that he had a natural talent with the bow.
As a young adult, Kis occasionally visited the Academy of the Rising Sun, and developed a crush on a woman studying there. Gayla was smart and beautiful and made it clear to Kis she had no time for relationships as her studies came first. She was working on a power free device that could track shadowspawn, and had plans to change the world.
Almost as soon as he found out the Black Tower had declared war on Andor, Kis left to join the battle. He was an archer, and not on the front lines by any means, but he did see action and was lauded for his bravery upon his return.
Recently, Kis has realized he is forgetting things, but is doing everything he can to hide that fact and convince himself it isn't happening.
Timeline for House Riatin:
1 FA - Ailil Riatin discovers her brother Toram had a son out of wedlock and takes it upon herself to care for the boy and his mother, with whom she develops a close relationship. The two women become partners and she adopts the boy (Prestin) allowing him access to the family name and titles.
38 FA - Ailil Riatin dies of old age and Prestin Riatin becomes head of the Riatin house. As separation from Andor becomes more popular among the houses, Prestin attempts to honor his adopted mother's memory by staying a supporter of remaining connected to Andor with a Trakand on the throne.
40 FA - When Cairhein regains its independence, Prestin's own stated preference of having a Trakand on the throne backfires as House Saighan is propelled to the top by an advantageous marriage. Their close relationship with House Delovinde increases that house's influence as well. His own house loses status having shown support for the wrong Trakand, and none for Lawcion. Instead of trying to curry favor with the new powers that be, Prestin tried to act as though nothing had happened, a move that gained House Riatin few friends.
76 FA - Kis fights in the war against the Black Tower as an archer.
78 FA - Kis returns home somewhat a war hero and marries a (rising) prestigious scholar at the Academy of the Rising Sun. He becomes very influential within the house of Riatin because of his fabled hero status.

He maintains good relations with the House of Trakand in Andor and the White Tower, while simultaneously receiving emissaries from the Black Tower after Rhalin was deposed. He befriends an Asha'man of the Air Legion at this time named Seden Brith. He continues the alliance with House Delovinde, but is not content to take a backseat in the plotting like his father.
80 FA - Kis has a daughter, Catrina Riatin. His father dies the same year of natural causes at the age of 82.
82 FA - Kis' wife (Gayla) travels to the Boarderlands to study the reemergence of the Blight and is killed there.

He wears a heron marked blade on his hip and claims to have earned it in the Tower War. However, this blade is a forgery and Kis is at best, average with the blade. No one is aware that the sword is fake, and it is unclear whether Kis remembers the truth, or now believes his own lie.

When Kis returned from the war, he declared his love for Gayla again and this time she returned his affections. Worrying about him at war had made her realize how much she cared for him. She continued her work at the Academy though, even after their daughter Catrina was born. Believing the answer to perfecting her device could be found in the Borderlands she traveled there, under the protest of her husband. She was killed there, and Kis was consumed by the death of another important woman in his life. He came to the decision that he could never love again, and began to seek to fill his emptiness with carnal pleasures.
Though he loves his daughter, Kis struggles to connect with her and their relationship is strained. She was very withdrawn, but when she did speak she was direct and blunt, things that seemed unnatural for a Carhienin. When she informed him she had been tested and had the ability to channel, her departure hurt him more than he let on. He sends her flowers every year on her birthday, though she has rarely contacted him.
Recently, Kis has realized he is forgetting things, but is doing everything he can to hide that fact and convince himself it isn't happening.
