Distinguishing Features:
When Avyanna's gaze falls on you, it can be hard to remember she can't see right into your mind. Though sharp, her eyes are also full of compassion and understanding, and make it easy to trust her. Her face is very expressive, as is the rest of her. She appears to be an open book, each emotion displaying brazenly. The only thing she seems to attempt to hide occasionally is her nose, which she believes to be much too large for her narrow features. She does also love her nose though. It is her only aspect she unmistakably inherited from her father. She feels conflicted about it, and that is evident to the careful observer. Sometimes she seems to be trying to draw attention to it, while other times she becomes unnerved by the most casual glance.
She never lets her hair grow too long, like a true Ebou Dari woman, and her jewelry often consists of: hoop earrings, her great serpent ring, and other finger rings adorned with garnets or pearls. She also likes to wear long necklaces to draw attention to the deep plunging necklines of her snug bodices. Her dresses are made of fine fabrics, and embroidered with lace. She likes to feel as alluring as a Shea Dancer, and welcomes the eyes of men and women alike.
Avyanna's accent combines both the slurred syllables notable amongst the Seanchan, as well as the tendency to drop the ends off some words common to the soft spoken Ebou Dari. The effect gives her tone a quality not unlike purring, and people need to listen carefully sometimes to catch everything she says. Her voice has been described as hypnotic by many.
She claims to be Ebou Dari and not Seanchan, but her style is somewhere between the two. Choosing to lacquer all of her nails is a conscious affront to her mother's culture, but she keeps them short and denies they have any status symbolism.
Blessed with a clever, quick mind, Avyanna can be romantic and charming to those who enjoy dry wit. She is intuitive, introspective, and deep thinking. She uses humor to deflect and trivialise on personal matters, making her somewhat mysterious and unknowable. Her intuition is her strongest guiding force, and she often follows her "gut feelings". Avyanna trusts herself above all others, and is seldom wrong. This self assurance makes her confident and she has no trouble starting conversations with others or speaking her mind when she disagrees with them.
She gravitates towards the finer things, enjoying the comforts in life. Avyanna prefers to mix with people of refinement and culture, but behind that sophisticated front, she can be surprisingly superstitious. She loves a good book and appreciates the arts. Though, she has very little artistic ability herself, and couldn't carry a tune to save a life. Her creative outlet is her job. Molding and shaping these young women takes even more creativity and originality than she sometimes believes she has. Luckily, that challenge is what she loves most about her position.
She is graceful and soft spoken. Even when she is angry, Avyanna's voice remains soft, which can be terrifying in its own right. As the Mistress of Novices, she is in charge of all the Novices and Accepted. She acts as both confidant and disciplinarian. When a Novice or Accepted finds that they have broken the rules, they are usually told by an Aes Sedai to report to the Mistress of Novices, who hands out punishment. Punishment ranges from a lecture to a severe switching, and extra chores are usually involved. However, she is also there if a new novice finds Tower life too difficult, and needs some comforting. Avyanna is generally kinder to novices who come to her for problems than Accepted, as it is expected that Accepted will know better.
Avyanna is pragmatic and deals with things in a sensible and realistic way that is based on practicality. She is very sympathetic, very firm, and always just in her disciplinary practices. She does her best to make her punishments fit their crimes. Though her compassion and empathy are expressed, she is also strict and her punishments can be harsh. She works hard to build a rapport with her charges, without ever compromising the rules of the Tower, or her own personal set of guidelines.
She attracts others from all Ajahs with her generosity and her consideration. There are very few who do not find her approachable, and most of those few are Tai'Seanchan. She is known as one of the most even-tempered Greens. Though she is no stranger to fits of passion, she is not overly stubborn and will admit when she is in the wrong, provided she can be convinced that she is. She has a positive disposition, a versatile adaptability, and an expressive nature, uncommon amongst the Aes Sedai serenity. She is lauded for her level-headedness. She is known for her dedication, good judgment, and passionate opinions. She appears to take her duties very seriously and is passionate in her ideals.
After her work, her deepest passion is her hawks. She visits them every morning, and still hunts with them occasionally. Her true passion is a secret of course, known to none but the one who holds her allegiance: Moghedien.
Avyanna was born shortly after the victory at Tarmon Gai'don to a sul'dam mother whose name will never again pass her lips. Her father was a captain in the Ancient and Honorable League of the Nets in Ebou Dari, her birthplace. Having parents of two different cultures, she was able to live in both worlds to an extent. Her mother was strictly Seanchan, but her father took her out and they had adventures in the city together. As she got older, she dreamt of becoming a morat'raken and flying above the clouds. She would hang around the morats and some even gave her tips and let her help with small tasks, mostly fetching things and cleaning. She never got to ride a raken, but she was told what to do when/if she ever did.
She was 13 and a half when the spark manifested within herself. She was hanging around the raken cages and wistfully expressed her desire to ride one to a morat'raken she was friendly with. Instead of the usual encouraging, but ultimately dismissive response, she suddenly agreed, and the two of them nearly took off before they were stopped. A week later she took ill with a sudden fever and chills. Her mother knew the signs and had her tested once no other explanation for her illness could be found. When her ability was discovered she was given the choice, cease to be Seanchan and train in the White Tower, never to see her family again...or serve the empress as a damane. To her mother, the decision had already been made, and the time she was given to consider her option (one week under her mother's supervision), was merely a formality. Her father, on the other hand, begged her to go. He believed that the Seanchan's practices were barbaric when it came to Channelers. He assured her that no matter what, he would come to visit her, and she would always be his daughter, no matter where she went. The next day, his fishing boat sank, leaving no survivors. Devastated, Avyanna clung to her mother and agreed to be collarded. The thought of losing anyone else was too much to bear.
She was a very obedient damane when she began, barely needing any punishments. Her mother held her leash most often, and the two bonded closer than ever. That all changed when the empress made her announcement, declaring the truth. Avyanna began to doubt her mother, she became angry and began questioning everything. She questioned whether her mother knew that she could channel as well, and about how her father's boat had wrecked. When he had brought up the possibility of them both being channelers in his argument she recalled how her mother had slapped him across the face. Avyanna became angrier than she had ever become in her life, and her mother responded by using the collar. As she lay crumpled at her mother's feet, she felt her love for the woman turn to hate.
From then on, she remained the dutiful damane, but it was as though the life went out of her. She went about her days numb, in a fog. Her mother believed she had broken her and Avyanna was trusted again. Trust allowed her some discretion to channel, but she felt dead inside. She only felt alive at night. At night, she was free. When she entered her dreams, she was the master of her domain. Slowly, over the period of a few months, she became lucid in her dreams. Once she knew she was dreaming, it was only a matter of time before she gained some control over her dreams. One night, attempting to find something new, she stumbled upon something old. She found herself in a place where it was dark all around her, with millions of pinpricks of light. One light seemed to attract her and she found herself drawn to it. Before she touched it, someone grabbed her arm and she found herself in a dark shadowy chamber with a woman who reminded her of herself. The woman had hair the same length as her own, touching her shoulders, though darker. Her eyes were bigger, but she still seemed older. She was very regal, more striking than beautiful. Avyanna did not know her true name then, it was only after she grew to love the other woman, that she found out. In the beginning, Moghedien had given Avyanna her damane name, and the truth came out slowly, as the two grew in closeness several nights a week for the next three and a half years. As Moghedien cemented her power in Seanchan, she told of her rise in rank to Avyanna, all the while teaching her to hone her skills in Tel’aran’rhiod and gleaning information of Tai'Seanchan in return.
Before the Seanchan fleet arrived, Moghedien warned her of the incoming invasion and urged her to leave to join the White Tower as a Novice. Feeling no regret, she broke ties with her biological mother completely, and took her father's last name, setting off for the tower. While there, she met a girl who claimed to be her half sister. Though it was difficult to accept at first, eventually, Avy's deep longing for the happy family unit she thought she had in childhood, allowed Zamira to find a place in her heart. She drew her sister close, and then drew her into the dark.
Moranna Trakand was also a Novice at this time and the two became very close. She was assigned to help Avyanna adjust to Novice life and Avy opened up to Moranna unlike with anyone else, though she still guarded her secret allegiance. While Zamira lusted after Gawain, Avyanna appeared to lust after Moranna. This was contrived by Moghedien who seemed to have a fixation on the Trakand line. The two became pillow friends, which continued until Moranna was raised to the shawl in 28 FA. During this time, she also knew Elnore Mandragoran, and Seana, with whom she shared a friendly rivalry. Seanna left the Tower shortly before Avyanna gained the ring, and Eleanor, a few years later. When Seana returned in 29 FA, their rivalry renewed and helped push Avyanna to the shawl.
She became a full Aes Sedai at the age of 33 and left the Tower immediately. She told others it was to find herself "a proper Borderland warder", claiming the Tower trained Gaidon were too stuffy for her tastes. In only a few years time, she found her warder, in Arafel, and they secretly spread evil together and rejoiced. Some of their exploits included: aiding in the escape of Alviarin Freidhen and Atal Mishraile from Stedding Sholoon, reawakening the blight in Shayol Ghul, and causing the siege on Tar Valon. All under the direction of Moghedien with the promise of becoming one of the next Chosen.
She and her Warder, Kit Harrelin, went with her sister to Stedding Sholoon. Together they linked, and it was Zamira who laid the weaves of compulsion on the Ogier who freed the darkfriends trapped in the stedding. Later, they traveled to the Blight all the way to what was once Shayol Ghul. There, she joined the circle of 13 and reopened the bore on that hallowed ground.
Avyanna then utilized her dream walking abilities and her compulsion talent to assist in corrupting Rahlin, causing the siege on Tar Valon, which ultimately brought on the death of her warder. After this, she decided to stay in the Tower as she recovered from her loss. She took up falconry to fill her time; purchasing several whitetail hawks b/c of the Seanchan superstition that a hawk with a white head flying away is an omen of great power. They make her feel extremely powerful. She keeps them outside the Tower in a hutch and has replaced each bird as it died with a new, almost identical one. Over the past 37 years, she has had nearly 50 white-tailed kite hawks.
In 80 FA, Silviana Brehon became Amyrlin Seat and appointed Avyanna to Mistress of Novices as a sign of the good relationship being developed between the Red and Green Ajahs. When she was succeeded by Katreine din Ziago, Avyanna was kept on. Notable Aes Sedai raised during her time as MoN: XXXX Mandragoran 88 - 100 FA raised to the Green Ajah, Sariska Atwahar 89 - 102 FA raised to the Brown, Ishara Trakand and Elaira Taravin 101 -112 FA raised to the Green and Red Ajahs respectively.
While serving as the Mistress of Novices, she found herself drawn to one of the unbonded warder trainees in the Yard. He was a borderlander, something she seemed to have a weakness for, and already a master swordsman. He had been tested by life and was well seasoned. After discovering his aptitude for teaching the other trainees, Avyanna quickly realized it would be a simple matter of maneuvering him to be next in line for the Master of the Yard position. She courted him, bonding over their love of educational instruction, and bonded him as her own. He does not know who she truly serves, and Avyanna plans to keep it that way.
In 100 FA Moranna returned to the White Tower, and the two resumed their close relationship, but are keeping things casual, and claim no hold on each other. After all these years though, Avyanna was finally able to turn her lover to the dark.
