Lira looks every inch a Domani woman: from her copper skin to the long, lithe curves of her body. Her hair is so dark it appears nearly black, until light catches it and highlights it's warmer tones. When Lira dances she wears it long, to her waist in loose waves, with flowing silk sash skirts in a myriad of colors. When performing on the aerial silks, she winds her hair tightly in a bun, favoring close fitted trousers that allow her freedom of movement but will not tangle in her rig. While on the road her hair does whatever it pleases and she wears voluminous trousers in the Kandori fashion, made with the thinnest Domani silk, and her gleewoman's cloak covered in dozens of fluttering patches. Regardless of her other attire, Lira favors silk artfully wrapped around her upper body to preserve (if barely) her modesty and leave her toned stomach bare.
Clever and witty, Lira has a sharp tongue and a sharper mind. She embraces her Domani heritage and fully steps into her sensuality, worshipping her body and inviting others to do the same with every movement, every glance, every word. She takes the Domani traditional art of seduction to new heights, quite literally when she ascends her aerial silks. Lira is charismatic to a fault and people are often drawn to her, for good or ill. Quick thinking and sometimes a well thrown dagger have kept her out of any lasting trouble so far. She is fiercely loyal and protective of all those she loves, and will verbally eviscerate any who dare speak ill of her rather large and motley extended family.
Lira's story begins, as most do, with the events leading to her birth. Vash Nirapovah was born to a Kandori woman who tamed bears in Valan Luca's Grand Traveling Show and Magnificent Display of Marvels and Wonders. Like many of the children, he grew up under the watchful eyes of Papa Luca and Baba Latelle. No one was ever sure which of the various youths were actually related to the show's founding father and his wife, but no one ever particularly cared either. Vash grew to be a giant of a man, his impressive forked Kandori beard and waxed mustaches heightening his fearsome appearance. Some years later, Reesa Bashal, the would-be heir to one of the most powerful merchant houses in Arad Doman, ran across the show. When she witnessed the performance of the Kandori Bear, the pair fell instantly and irreparably in love with one another. Abandoning all plans to bring her cargo of silks to trade at market, Reesa took what she could carry and joined the show, never once looking back. The troupe of performers welcomed Reesa with open arms, offering the new couple a wagon of their own. In return for the kindness, Reesa made costumes from the bolts of Domani silk. Still some of the wealth from her previous life remained. Inspired by the artists who walked across wires high above the ground, Reesa began experimenting with the silks suspended high in the air. Before long, she was a performer herself, not just the wife of one.
Years passed, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Lira to the very large and extended troupe family. They adored her as much as they worshiped one another. Born on the road, as all the troupe children were, Lira was loved and cared for by everyone in the show, especially Gran, the troupe's herbalist and frequent caregiver of children. Gran's tongue could be as sharp as a dagger for those caught breaking the (relatively few) rules of the camp, or sweet as honey for those in need. No one knew for sure how old she was, but the lack of any fine lines around her sharp black eyes or any trace of silver amongst the jet black of her hair made her too young to be grandparent to anyone. They all called her Gran anyways.
A few years later, before Lira had formed any lasting memories of life without him, Mikha'il was born to Reesa and Vash. The Bashal children thrived together for a few years, listening to Domani folktales and songs from their mother, and being exuberantly tossed, caught, tumbled, and otherwise physically doted upon by their joyously loud father. Their family was full of love, and life, and passion. Pursuing whatever brought them joy was heartily encouraged, without restraint caused by the expectations of others. "Let your feet walk the path of bliss," a phrase their mother so often used, usually as their parents shared a look of deep adoration.
Their education was as wide and varied as the members of the troupe. Seduction and shrewd negotiation techniques from Reesa, as well as Lira asking to learn the silks almost as soon as she was able to talk. While neither of the children had Vash's build, he trained them both to use their quickness and agility against a much larger opponent like himself. From Gran the basics of herbs and poultices, the healing of broken bones and broken spirits. Still others taught things like knife throwing, fire eating, trick riding on horses and how to handle many of the more exotic animals, and a myriad of instruments, songs and stories from every corner of every nation.
Their childhoods passed in wonder and happiness, Lira's boldness and sharp tongue balanced by Mikha's gentleness. At a young age, the duo began performing alongside their parents, and later as their own act. Lira would dance, sing, and perform dizzying spins and drops while Mikha learned and played music of every type. While her little brother had never been as acrobatic as Lira as a child, much of his physical activity came to a halt after an accident one winter, when he nearly drowned. Gran had been able to pull him back from death, but thereafter his breathing never came easily and movement quickly drained him. Despite his new limitations, Mikha continued accompanying Lira with the voice he had left, his music.
As they grew, their performances became more elaborate, telling entire stories; Mikha'il with his fiddle and Lira with her voice and body. Unfortunately, her little brother's illness grew too. Gran's herbs could no longer do more than dull the worst of his symptoms. When the show set up near a Yellow Ajah hospital in Altara, Lira asserted that she would take him for Healing
In a surprise turn of events, an Asha'man of the Fire Legion happened to be visiting at the same time and was testing for potential channelers. Deciding it would be a lark, Lira convinced her brother that they should both present themselves for testing. Lira was not a candidate, but Mikha'il was, much to the shock of everyone involved.
In short order, he was stepping through a Gateway to Caralain carrying only a sack full of clothes and the troupe's parting gift, a violin. Lira felt bittersweet about the moment. She would miss her brother, and his playing, but his path led him to the Black Tower, and the family would always support each other in whatever life them chose.
Deciding to see where her feet would lead her, Lira did not immediately return to the show. Eventually, it would be her ears, that would call her to a path. A path that led to a smoke-filled tavern with the sound of a fiddle dancing on the air. Inside, a woman played with fiddle with a ferocity and liveliness that enraptured her audience. She seemed of an age with Lira herself, and after sitting through the night's performance, she motioned the young woman over for a drink. The pair hit it off immediately and by the time the sun rose, Lira had made the decision to see what life on the road without the show would bring.
