PERSONALITY
Hannele is a hardworking traditionalist who prefers to connect with others through ritual and routine. Orderly, rule-abiding, and conscientious, she likes to get things done, and tends to go about projects in a systematic, methodical way. She values predictability and prefers things to proceed in a logical order. When she sees a lack of organization, she often takes the initiative to establish processes and guidelines, so that everyone knows what's expected. She deeply appreciates structure and often begins to organize as soon as she enters a room. She wants to establish the ground rules and make sure everyone does what they’re supposed to.
She will take command of situations, with the sense that she knows how things should go and is ready to take charge to make sure that it happens. She is extremely task-oriented and always puts work before play. Confident and tough-minded, she appears almost always to be in control.
However, she doesn't desire to work alone, and expects her reliability and work ethic to be reciprocated. She always meets her promises, and if others jeopardize them through incompetence or laziness, or worse still, dishonesty, she does not hesitate to show her wrath. She is quick to let these “deviants” know what she thinks, considering it her duty to set things right. This has earned a reputation for inflexibility, but it’s not because she is arbitrarily stubborn, but because she truly believes that these values are what make society work. Seeing things to completion borders on an ethical obligation for her.
Hannele prefers evidence over conjecture, and trusts her personal experience above everything else. She has strong convictions about what is right, wrong, and socially acceptable. Her compulsion to create order often extends to all things and everyone, ignoring the possibility that there are two right ways to get things done.
She is such a strong adherent to tradition that when suddenly forced to try unvetted solutions, she becomes uncomfortable and stressed. New ideas suggest to her that her methods weren’t good enough, and abandoning what has always worked before in favor of something that may yet fail risks her image of reliability. The problem with being so fixated on what works is that she will too often dismiss what might work better. Everything is opinion until proven, and she is extremely reluctant to trust an opinion long enough for it to have that chance.
Chaos makes things unpredictable, and unpredictable things can’t be trusted when they are needed most - this security is her motivation to strive to create order in her environment the way that she does.
Her greatest weakness is expressing emotions and feeling empathy. Often, she can get so caught up in the facts and most effective methods that she tends to forget to think of what makes others happy, or of their sensitivity. A detour can be breathtakingly beautiful for some, but Hannele would only see the consequence of arriving at her destination an hour late.
HISTORY
Hannele was born the daughter of a successful seamstress who owned a farm just outside Tanchico in Tarabon. Her father worked the farm and she stayed home with him and her brother and sisters much of the time. She was the oldest of four children, and helped care for her younger siblings. She began running the household while her mother was at work, making dresses for the nobles in the city. She kept the younger children in line, took care of the bulk of the chores, organized the family schedule, and did the shopping. In her free time, she enjoyed tending to the smaller garden her father had set aside for her near the house.
Her parents treated her more like an equal to themselves than her siblings and Hannele flourished in this environment. She loved discussing her mother's business with her and assisted her in the book keeping somewhat regularly. She never felt like a child, but neither did she wish to. She enjoyed helping to raise her siblings and was extremely proud of the responsibilities given to her.
Occasionally, her uncle would visit the family, and Hannele always felt uncomfortable around him, even before she found out his profession. He was a torturer, used by the nobility, and when Jaq moved to Caemlyn to work for Arymilla Marne and later Elayne Trakand, she was happy to see him go. She didn't care for the way her father and her brother acted when he was around. It cemented in her mind that men could easily be lead astray by their own kind.
She was closest to her sister who was only two years younger than herself, though they were very different people. Isabelle was far more carefree and adventurous than Hannele and much less responsible. She was a daydreamer who could hardly wait to go out and see the world. When she turned 15 she begged Hannele to take her to be tested by an Aes Sedai who had ordered a number of gowns from their mother. The Aes Sedai determined that Isabelle was unable to touch the source, but to everyone's surprise, Hannele could learn. Isabelle felt betrayed by this discovery and said some painful things to her sister before she was taken to the White Tower. Hannele's parents were a mixture of proud and saddened by the news, and her younger siblings didn't seem to fully understand the magnitude of what was happening.
She was a student in the White Tower during a very tumultuous time, with the schism happening shortly after she was raised. Being so new to the shawl she had nothing to do with Hall's decision to depose Siuan and raise Elaida, but she was outraged by those who questioned the Tower's leaders and had difficulty accepting the Blue Ajah's return. While she eventually realized that Elaida seemed to be taking some things too far, she could sympathize with the woman's struggle to command. There had been situations in her past where she had felt the need to take a firm hand to her siblings.
At first, she did not care for the changes the rebel Aes Sedai brought back with them concerning the structure of Novices and Accepted, but in time, as more initiates joined the Tower, she saw their value and accepted the practice as though it had always been that way.
She fought in the Last Battle as a part of a circle, but was extremely wary of the men channeling around her. She could not bring herself to truly trust them, and like a number of her Red sisters, refused to bond with any of them even when it was highly encouraged to do so. She held onto her distrust until it was proven to her yet again in Rhalin. When Red Sisters who had bonded Asha'man were killed, or felt the deaths of the men they had bonded, her suspicions were seen as wise, and she was elected as a Sitter in the Hall. She has been a strong dissenter against allying with the Black Tower in any way. She staunchly refuses to believe that the taint was fully cleansed.
