Ginelle, or Ginny, as her few friends call her, is sort of the worst. She isn’t especially good at anything but being pretty, you see, and that hasn’t brought her much happiness. Ginny is sly, selfish, and opportunistic, using every trick to gain an advantage whenever possible, but she doesn’t have many tricks. She isn’t terribly bright, unfortunately—or, perhaps she simply hasn’t yet discovered what she really is good at.
Ginny is self-aware enough to recognize her own shortcomings, and cynical enough to think the worst of people at first glance (and second, third, and fourth). She generally divides people into potential enemies or potential victims, and it’s difficult for her to make friends. She insists that she doesn’t actually need any friends, though. None at all!
Despite the fact that she is, objectively, fairly unpleasant, Ginny isn’t actually malicious or evil. It’s more that she’s massively socially inept and has a limited understanding of how to bond with people in a positive way, coupled with few experiences that have changed her generally sour opinion of the world. She’s slightly evil, yes, but mostly in an ineffective and instinctive way. Like a cat, say.
Deep down, Ginny harbors a quiet fascination with people and with small, fragile things. She would like to be loved and accepted for who she is, though she doesn’t quite know who that is yet.
The daughter of a prosperous pair of Kandori merchants with aspirations, Ginny spent her childhood expecting to be married off to a fellow merchant—or better, if her parents could manage it. To a lord’s son, maybe, though nobles were exceedingly thin on the ground in Kandor. And why not? Ginny was more than pretty enough to catch someone’s eye, and though she’d never possessed the boldness prized in a Borderlander she had a certain tough thorniness to her.
Unfortunately, though Ginny was adaptable and clever enough to polish her manners well, she never did meet her match. And perhaps that was for the best, for as Ginelle reached her teens she swiftly came to realize that her parents wouldn’t mind pairing her off with a horse, if he possessed a minor title.
No, thank you. Ginelle quite liked the thought of living a pampered life, with a proper lady’s maid and livery and all the rest, but if she must be saddled with a husband to do it she’d like him to at least be young and handsome. Possibly a soft southerner, too, rather than a Borderlander, a man from a rich nation that hadn’t nearly been shattered by the Seanchan incursion.
Or maybe she’d find her way on her own, ha! The Aes Sedai were respected, weren’t they? It was said Tar Valon was the grandest city in the world. Every room of the White Tower was probably a palace in its own right, with no stupid potential husbands and no overbearing parents around every corner.
Ginelle liked that idea. She had no idea whether she could channel or not, but at the very least it’d be a stop on the way to somewhere else grand. Right? Yes!
It was a small matter to borrow a horse—a gentle palfrey named Song—and some money. Maybe more money than she needed, but what did she know about planning a journey? And some dresses, too. Quite a few. And spare shifts and underthings. Many of them. Ginelle wasn’t about to wear the same every day. She was horrified at the thought.
Poor Song was quite weighed down when the river flooded over its banks and sent them both spilling into the water. Song made it out while Ginny splashed haplessly through the water, struggling to gather her escaping spare clothes before they were entirely lost. To her horror, a drowning man clutched at her instead.
She did her best to shake him off, nearly losing her footing in the process, but they both ended up floundering to shore. Song was there, wet but unharmed, but most of Ginelle’s clothing and much of her money was lost.
She managed to shake Vanya off and arrived at Tar Valon with little coin left. Somewhat to her surprise, she tested reasonably well and was allowed to enroll in the novice book.
The training was more difficult than Ginelle anticipated. Much more difficult. She’d never actually dreamed of becoming Aes Sedai, not like the girls she was now studying with, and for a time Ginelle felt as though she ought to run away, despite the near-impossibility, or at least give up.
She found a new motivator, though: spite. Ginelle wasn’t about to allow the rest of them to laugh at her. No! Never!
Through a grim combination of spite and friendlessness, which gave her ample time for her studies, Ginelle fought her way through to test for the ring in decent time. Although she wasn’t particularly gifted in anything but spirit, she was determined to make it as far as she could. Mostly so she could spit on those who’d laughed at her.
That was good enough motivation, right?

Distinguishing Features:
- Ginelle is short and slight, with pale skin and blond hair. She’s quite pretty, and is quite good at presenting herself well, using her looks to her advantage when she sees an opportunity for it.
- Ginelle is not athletically gifted and is more graceless than she would like. She’s not a good dancer, she’s terrible at sports, and she is generally useless at most forms of physical activity, including riding.
- Her hair is long, fine, and light as a cloud. So she thinks, anyways. Ginelle is vain about it and is reluctant to appear anywhere without her hair done Just So.
