PERSONALITY
Not a man of many words, Rayn is able to convey volumes in a look. He is somewhat introverted, but is very open minded with people and willing to give everyone a chance. If someone betrays his trust though, it is very difficult to regain it. Rayn has a fear of abandonment. He feels like everyone in his life is always leaving him.
Rayn does have an aggressive streak. When angry, he finds it easier to use his fists than his words, but that has been working for him for the most part so far.
Despite not having much of a formal education before joining the Korvin family, Rayn is very smart, and did just as well as Siefh at the academy.
HISTORY
Rayn was born in Emond's Field, Manetheren, but spent most of his life elsewhere. When he was eight his older brother started a fire that damaged a large number of buildings in the town. Burdened by the debt, the family fled Manetheren, moving to Lugard, Murandy. His father entered the smuggling trade there, and was semi-successful until getting arrested in Tear. After the arrest, Rayn's family moved to Tear to be closer to his imprisoned father.
Rayn's mother has a drinking problem, and suffers from mental health issues brought on by trauma, domestic abuse, and extended poverty. Rayn's brother continued on a destructive path, and it was he who actually stole the Korvin's coach. Rayn was merely a passenger. Unfortunately during the chase, Rayn's brother crashed the coach into a tree and was killed. Their mother, grief stricken and in shock, threw Rayn out of the house, not wanting to watch him turn to crime and crash and burn like everyone else in her life.
Having nowhere else to turn, Rayn threw himself at the mercy of Sandi Korvin, the man to whom the coach belonged, offering to work off his debt in exchange for room and board. Sandi took him on as a Ward on the condition that he watch over his only son. Rayn agreed and quickly found that he actually liked Siefh, though he doesn't always know why.
Trouble seems to follow Siefh. Rayn being the more worldly of the two has tried to caution his headstrong friend, but Siefh rarely looks before he leaps. It's never helped that Siefh is a magnet for ridicule either. Rayn has found himself in more than a few physical altercations sticking up for his friend. Continuously getting in trouble together was great for bonding though, and the two became as thick as thieves.
The love between the two young men warmed the hearts of Siefh's parents and they truly began to treat Rayn as though he were another son. They encouraged him to think of the possibility of a future.
When they enrolled in the Academy of the Enduring Stone, Rayn focused his study on economics, but also enjoyed learning about the different governments throughout the Westlands. He was given the opportunity of an entry level assistance position with a banker, and accepted it, leaving the academy shortly before the announcement of Siefh's betrothal. When Siefh ran away, Rayn felt guilty knowing his friend had probably needed him a lot right then, and he had tried to be there for him, but it was difficult with his work. After two years, he finally left that job to go and convince his friend to come home. He hadn't been able to stop worrying about Siefh that whole time, and hated thinking that his friend might have felt abandoned by him. It haunted him because that was his own worst fear.
Once Siefh was back home, Rayn began training in combat and weaponry instead of trying to return to the banker or to the academy. He liked it. Rayn had enjoyed academics, and numbers and figures came naturally to him, but this engaged both his mind and his body. Rayn needed this. There was a lot on his mind that he needed to get off his chest, but couldn't find the words to express. Fighting was the most satisfying thing he ever done. He did it to train, and sometimes to earn money. Kiersa and Sandi didn't like that though. Eventually, Siefh convinced him to take jobs at the academy instead, which had the added benefit of the two of them being together more.
That turned out to be more dangerous than fighting for coin though. While helping Siefh assist a visiting Aes Sedai, they were attacked, and Rayn was stabbed in the stomach. With all the adrenaline of the fight he didn't notice right away until he took a couple steps. Suddenly he started to shake and a pulsating pain started working it’s way through his abdomen growing in intensity until it became quite literally crippling. It stopped him dead in his tracks and even breathing hurt. He was very wet around his groin and backside and realized it was blood saturating his clothes. Things started to get hazy and then he woke up in a bed back in town.
Once he found out Siefh had actually saved him for once, he jokingly requested healing again for the shock, and promised to stay by his friend's side as he entered this intimidating new chapter of his life. He went with Siefh to the Black Tower, but chose to live in the city. His pride wouldn't let him stay in the servant's quarters in the Tower. Instead he got a job at a local tavern keeping the peace, and rooms above it. He works nights though, and so spends most of his days at the Black Tower training with the blademasters there, intent on becoming Siefh's bonded alantin when he is raised to Asha'man.
