Distinguishing Features:
Due to the decreased aging of channelers, Elian appears to be a young man in his mid to late '30s. His rectangular face has sharp-angular cheekbones, an average nose, cleft chin, and has no blemishes or scars, though there is a beauty mark below his right eye. Gifted with a pair of long, thin lips, Elian can achieve quite a wide, bright smile. This smile comes in handy when he plays the charming diplomat or advisor. Short and bushy eyebrows sit above narrow almond-shaded eyes of a deep brown hue. He is a tall and slender man with an athletic build. Unfortunately, he's also tragically covered in multiple scars upon his back. Elian has short dark brown hair that he keeps slicked back off his face while also sporting a thick, trimmed beard. He is always well dressed, seen only wearing very finely made clothes that are always kept neat and clean.
Elian is an extroverted jack of all trades with a charming personality and abundant confidence. His eloquent speech, sharp-wits, and skill in Daes Dae'mar serve him well. And being an observant man, he notices the quirks and mannerisms of those around him fairly quickly. Reading other people's body language is vital in his line of work, as is helping foreign dignitaries find common ground with one another. And though most find him agreeable, Elian is not without his enemies. He's been on the hit lists of darkfriends, nobility, and even former lovers. Oh, while on the subject of those lovers, being bisexual, Elian has been with both men and women. He has no preference for one over the other, as he finds both sexes attractive and pleasurable. Though he is currently only sharing his bed with Iris.
He can be an unreadable book when necessary and can keep the secrets of numerous souls, including his own. Although skilled in several characteristics, Elian is not without his imperfections. He has both a gambling and drinking problem. When making bets, he doesn't know when to stop. He loves raising the stakes to extremes. Flashbacks or nightmares from his past primarily cause his drinking. More than once, he's awoken in a cold sweat after reliving that dark time in his life. He will display a troubling vulnerability when people touch his scars or ask about them. Lastly, Elian can be a tad cocky and arrogant plus he has trust issues. One unquestionable quality about Elian is his fierce loyalty to Iris.
Elian was born in 983 NE to Rosaida Lamaera in Cairhien, Cairhien. His father was a Warder of the White Tower named Stevan Gedarien. Stevan was a Warder to a Brown Aes Sedai named Demira Eriff. As for Elian, well, he was the result of a drunk escapade, on his father’s part, after Demira fell asleep while the pair were on a strenuously extended mission. She had to block him for the remainder of the night due to his fling. But Rosaida and Stevan would never see each other again after that night. He wouldn’t even know of Elian’s existence until the boy was 13. Then, in 996 NE, a letter was sent from Rosaida’s neighbor informing him of her passing from pneumonia and how she’d confessed on her death bed of who Elian’s father was. Stevan wrote back to have his son sent to the White Tower. There, his father could get him a job as a stable boy in the training yard.
When Elian turned 15, he started his training as a Warder Trainee. He longed to be a great Warder, just like his father. And when Stevan was not at the White Tower, he would exchange letters with his son to give the boy pointers in combat. After his father returned victoriously from the Last Battle, Elian was even more determined to make his father proud. But in 2 FA, both he and his father would be surprised when the 17-year-old accidentally set fire to a training dummy through channeling the Source. It was a revelation that shocked them both, but Elian was excited to become an Asha’man. So he was sent to the Black Tower, which Logain Ablar had moved, just four months prior, to the Caralain grass.
In 6 FA, Elian would rise to the rank of Dedicated, and then four years after that, he would become an Asha’man of the Air Legion. Stevan was immensely proud of how far Elian had come since his days of being the shy, frightened, and scraggly petite teen dropped at the White Tower. And the next twelve years would make for some of the happiest memories of his life. He’d explore much of the world while fulfilling his duties for the Black Tower and met some fascinating characters along the way. He’d even bear witness to Caralain’s growth as a nation as the fruitions of Logain’s efforts blossomed. But all of his happiness dissipated in 22 FA when Elian received word of his father’s death. Even though Stevan passed peacefully in his sleep, Elian was still devastated by his loss. It would take a few years for him to heal and move forward with his life.
He was sent to the western front of Andor to fight the Seanchan Army within 24 FA. While there, he would meet and befriend another Asha’man named Gawain Trakand. The two became so close that he even attended the man’s wedding a year later to Elia Aybara. Then five years after that, Elian sent their daughter Adora a gift to celebrate her birth. The two retained their brotherly bond across vast distances, finding ways to stay in touch. So it is of little surprise that Elian fell into a pit of depression and got beyond piss-ass drunk when he learned of Gawain’s death in 38 FA. Elian was so eaten away by the loss of his friend that he requested reassignment in the Blight to fight as if doing so would somehow bring back his friend.
But Elian would be called back from the Borderlands to serve in Cairhien. It would be the first time since his mothers’ passing that he’d return to his birthplace. Somehow it felt so much smaller and far more deceptive than he remembered it being. Still, he passed between the Houses as an assistant, advisor, or bodyguard. Elian remained in Cairhien for the next 14 years, becoming quite skilled at Daes Dae’mar as the years passed by. He’d also adapt his taste for refined fabrics and a neat and orderly appearance during this time. Elian would also explore his sexuality at this age, realizing he was bisexual. He even partook in a slightly scandalized affair with a married lord but managed to keep his name from ever being connected to the incident.
During a sentimental leave to visit Tar Valon and pay respect to his father’s resting place, Elian nearly met a fatal end at the hands of an assassin hired by a jilted ex-lover. Fortunately for him, he was saved by a beautiful Aes Sedai named Iris Kashir. She was able to knock his attacker back with an impressive gust of wind before he could finish Elian off. So grateful and indebted was he to Iris that he swore a life debt to her. He felt that he owed her his services until he could save her life in return. She agreed to let Elian stay to determine if their relationship was compatible enough to be bonded together.
Elian would spend the next five years in Tar Valon working with Iris and building a solid bond. And in 60 FA, Iris finally agreed to bond him. Afterward, Elian stopped sharing his bed with rotations of partners, for a budding romance had begun to bloom between him and Iris. They would become an exclusive item within the year but kept their relationship secret from everyone else while still within Tar Valon.
Assigned to Cairhien in 65 FA, Iris and Elian would travel together to serve their respective Towers. And for the next eight years, Elian served as an ambassador in Cairhien. He worked hard to strengthen the bonds between the Black Tower and the fabulous Cairhienin Houses. These improved relationships helped fund the Tower’s efforts against the Blight and expand Caralain’s economy. But after Rahlin’s ascension as M’Hael, the Black Tower’s reputation began taking a turn for the worse.
In 74 FA, Rahlin called Elian back to the Black Tower. At first, he couldn’t understand why the M’Hael desired an audience with him, but his duty was clear, so he reported in. What happened next still haunts Elian to this day. Rahlin interrogated him in a fit of madness, insisting that the Asha’man knew intimate details of the White Tower’s layout and demanded he reveals them. Elian was shocked! He knew very little of the White Tower’s makeup outside the training yard, main hall, kitchen, and the warder barracks. But Rahlin refused to believe this and imprisoned Elian as a ‘traitor’ within the dungeons.
Being locked behind bars, even unjustly, hardly bothered the man, but the beatings he’d take over the next four years were a different story. At first, it was to pry information about the White Tower out of him, but as Rahlin’s madness grew, the reasons behind his beatings seemed to vary. Sometimes he’d be asked about key members of the Cairhienin Houses; other times, it was to learn how to play Daes Dae’mar. There were even occasions when he didn’t question Elian but still beat him. Rahlin once claimed that he’d kill Iris so that Elian would lose his will to live. He declared that Elian would be left to rot in his cell, frothing at the mouth, crippled in his grief, and begging to die. The whole ordeal deeply affected Elian’s psyche to the extent of giving him nightmares and turning the man to drink.
After Rahlin was captured in 78 FA, Elian was set free from the dungeons. The new M’Hael Androl Genhald offered to heal his back to apologize for his poor treatment. But Elian refused to be healed. Instead, he declared that his scars would serve as a reminder that he shouldn’t trust people so quickly. He felt betrayed and was understandably traumatized by what he’d gone through. He even considered retiring from the Black Tower, but after reuniting with Iris, Elian decided to stay the course and put the whole ugly affair behind him(which was easier said than done).
Elian would be raised to Central Theater Captain in 80 FA due to his prior successes in Cairhien as an advisor. And although he still struggled with the trauma from his past, Elian found happiness in his life once more. He worked hard to repair relationships between the Black Tower and the world’s central nations. Not to mention, his romance with Iris had grown even more substantial. But they continued to keep it a secret, especially with the strenuous relationship between the Towers increasing. So when Elian realized there was no woman, or man for that matter, in the world that would make him happier, he proposed marriage to Iris. The pair tied the knot in a secret ceremony within Spring of 94 FA.
After Jadin al’Vyron became M’Hael, a Delegation between the White and Black Tower was held. Elian happily volunteered to participate as he hoped it meant stronger ties between the two Towers. And stronger ties meant Elian and Iris would no longer have to hide their relationship. It had been an occasion to mark the ages and one he’s proud to claim taking part in. But one of the most unprecedented decisions had occurred at the Delegation: The M’Hael and the Amyrlin agreed to double-bond in a bonding ceremony to take place the following year.
Finally, things were looking up for the Black Tower and its relationships with the rest of the world. But fate is a cruel mistress. Jadin al’Vyron would never make the Bonding Ceremony. Instead, he was assassinated on his journey to the White Tower. So now Elian is assigned to oversee the Dedicated sent to the White Tower for the Exchange Program with tensions higher than ever. Or at least that’s the official reason. In reality, he’s being sent there to spy on the Red Ajah to learn if they had anything to do with Jadin’s death. Elian hopes this vicious accusation is nothing more than a scurrilous rumor... But only time will tell.
