Distinguishing Features:
Once upon a time Aenerion might have been a good and gentle man, loyal to his very core, but the loss of his wife shattered him into a thousand pieces. It was the Shadow that reached out in his time of need, the Shadow which offered him a reprieve from his pain and it was the Shadow that offered him purpose. Through the machinations of the Black Ajah and Shadow Legion the Dark One earned his loyalty and began to cultivate his talents, turning him into a ruthless killer who lacks ambition unlike many of his peers. Aenerion simply serves, he wants to break the cycle and will ruthlessly break any who stand in his way but he takes no pleasure in it, he understands the pain of the Pattern and sees himself as one of the chosen ones who might liberate the world.
Aenerion carries himself with confidence and calm, a stoney exterior broken only by the suave smiles and charming smirks. He even carries himself like a man who has seen the worst the world can throw at him and come out on top, his confidence and lack of ambition make him an incredibly dangerous, diligent adversary…
Once, a long time ago, Aenerion walked in service of the Light as a loyal Asha’man with tremendous potential. He started life as the son of two Kandori noble houses, trained in the art of war to protect the Borderlands from the Blight and thus the people from the Shadow. He learned the art of war from his father and administration from their household staff; a gleeman took up residence upon the estate for a time who taught him to play the harp, the lyre and the lute. When his father died with a brigand’s arrow through his heart he stood to inherit everything and yet the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills…
An Asha’man discovered his spark and practically dragged him to the Black Tower where he became a Soldier, studying the ways of the One Power.
Despite his potential and the surprising lack of blocks Aenerion’s training progresses slowly, he lacks the self-discipline and commitment to progress and so the instructors watched him and waited. They held him back even as his mastery of the one power grew and grew, it was during the final years of his time as a Soldier that Aenerion proved them right. He fled into the night only to be rounded up by two Asha’man of the Fire Legion who dragged him back, shielded, and thus he was punished. Severely. Aenerion is held back for yet more years despite his potential, the captains believe that by holding him back they are giving him more time to mature and grow into his power, into the responsibility that comes with the power within him. Finally in the 34th year of the Third Age Aenerion joins the ranks of the Dedicated when he shoulders the punishment for one of his fellow Soldiers, showing that finally he has matured and that he understands what it means to be a member of the Legions.
Shortly after rising to the rank of Dedicated one of Aenerion’s instructors discovered his ability to not only dream, but to walk the world of dreams in earnest. The rarity of Dreamwalkers put great weight upon Aenerion and his fate so the captains turned their eyes upon him once more, watching his development carefully and seeking to push him to fulfill his potential. As the captains took notice of Aenerion so did the Shadow, turning its eyes upon him and watching his progress carefully. To turn a talented Dreamwalker to the side of the Dark One would be a boon, especially one with so much raw strength. He felt their touch upon his dreams, even when he did not walk, yet he did not understand nor did he truly appreciate the magnitude of his gifts for many years. During his training he showed an affinity for defensive weaves, particularly counter-play between male channelers, and thus agents of the Shadow worked to strengthen him while twisting him to their side while the eyes of the Black Tower were upon him and his peers.
Marked as one with great potential by the Shadow, and his dreaming instructor, Aenerion ascended to the rank of Asha’man years behind some of his peers. He remained within Caralain and the Black Tower following his ascension until a band of Aiel stopped in the Black Tower, requisitioning supplies from the Asha’man. When the Aiel revealed they were hunting a band of Kandori sellswords with familiar colours Aenerion joined the hunt, hoping to bring them to justice for the murder of his father. Somewhere along the way they came across an Aes Sedai of the Grey Ajah, a Nyssia, who joined them.
As the months slipped by Aenerion and Nyssia found common ground then they grew closer until parting from the Aiel to continue the hunt alone. Their travels took them to the farthest northern reaches of civilization, forcing them to not only work together but to understand one another. As the months slipped by they became basically inseparable until Nyssia demanded that they bond so that they might remain together, even when apart. Shortly after establishing their bond, while in Malkier, they chose to marry.
In the wake of their marriage Aenerion opened up to his wife, confessing that a shadow apparition has been following him through the world of dreams for as long as he has walked through Tel’aran’rhiod. Understandably, she expresses her concerns but before they can get to the bottom of it tensions boil over between the Towers forcing them both to return to their respective factions.
Aenerion continued to see his wife in secret, visiting her dreams and meeting with her in the waking world to share information and simply enjoy one another’s company. Despite the division brewing between the towers and Rahlin’s madness they still managed to find special moments together until the drums of war began to echo across the land. Aenerion was recalled to the Black Tower and soon he found himself outside the White Tower as part of the advanced war party when he met with Nyssia to share everything he knew about Rahlin’s plans, at least until the Dreamspikes were in place and the forces of the Asha’man were pushed back over and over. Aenerion found himself watching the forces of the Aes Sedai and the Dragon’s Compact from the walls of the Black Tower compound, knowing that just out of reach his wife was watching. He had to watch as his brothers, those who were not within the Black Tower when the siege began, tried to fight their way home only to be met by a party of Aes Sedai. He could feel the tremendous power being wielded by both parties, he watched as lightning ripped through the sky.
He could feel Nyssia drawing on the power through the bond, that rush of life mingling with her fear and even remorse then the bond broke. He felt it, his heart and mind snapped like a twig beneath a soldier’s boot and immediately he began to draw upon the power. He drew and drew intending to cleanse all of Rahlin’s followers from the Westlands with fury and fire but right as he began to weave his brothers shielded him. Ten of them working in concert to suppress his might leaving him with nothing but the overwhelming agony and the desire to avenge Nyssia, his wife and Aes Sedai.
The Asha’man dragged him into the bowels of the Black Tower even as the siege raged above and imprisoned him, under constant guard. Perhaps Rahlin believed that he could harness Aenerion’s fury or his brothers did not want to harm him, whatever the reason Aenerion lived in darkness for months on end. Nights and days merged into one agonising mess, he ate when forced and his brothers kept his power contained right up until the last days of the siege when Rahlin was deposed, handed to the forces of the Dragon’s Compact in chains to be judged by the White Tower for his crimes. His dreams were plagued with the agony of his loss and his failure, agony which the Shadow exploited to turn him little by little against the Light. Night after night Aenerion resisted until finally the shadowy apparition in Tel’aran’rhiod offered him a way to bring Nyssia back and to stop her suffering ever again if Aenerion would simply help the Dark One break the Wheel.
When the Aes Sedai found him and freed him they believed Aenerion simply stood against Rahlin and his madness, they ignored the protests of the Asha’man shielding him and demanded that they free Aenerion. The man who emerged from that cell had so little in common with the Aenerion who once walked the world, he was broken. He served the Shadow, having sworn his eternal soul into the Dark One’s service.
Given time to heal Aenerion took advantage of the divisions within the Black Tower to steal items of power, an Angreal with which he could amplify his power, and he drove wedges between the Asha’man and sought to keep the Towers wary of one another. He learned the art of compulsion from his Shadowy apparition by night and honed his other skills by day, under loose observation by his brothers who were still concerned.
When finally the Legion captain had an assignment for him Aenerion accepted gladly, for the Shadowy apparition also needed his services. He was charged with visiting Illian in order to bring a rogue channeler to justice by the Black Tower and the Shadow charged him with the death of an Aes Sedai. Shortly after his return to the Black Tower the White Sister’s body is found thirty-seven miles from the Stone of Tear, her flesh burned from her bones in a horrifying display of cruelty and power. The captains see his success in Illian as evidence of his sanity and determination, thus they commanded him to join a contingent of Asha’man travelling to the Blight.
Their excursions into the Blight were brutal, surrounded by his brothers Aenerion pretended to defend them and stand against the Shadow but little by little he worked to undermine their efforts until finally they came face to face with a Myrddraal and its Trollocs. The fade tore through the surprised Asha’man and eventually Aenerion was the last man standing who emerged from the Blight carrying the head of the Fade, gored and charred. Earning the title of Dreadbane convinced his remaining brothers of Aenerion’s loyalty, for why would a Shadow friend kill a Fade, and so when he left for Malkier no-one questioned him. Nor did they question his Dreamwalking, unaware of the fact that Aenerion continued to spy on the Asha’man, the Aes Sedai and the captains. He began to worm his way into the dreams of the generals and captains in particular, probing for weaknesses and terrorising them while ensuring his tracks remained undiscovered.
And eventually he was forced to withdraw from the Borderlands, his torso burned and scarred leading him to return to the Black Tower after seeking out healing from one of the Water Legion. Once settled within the Tower once more Aenerion leveraged the trust and reputation he gained to spy on his peers, sowing the seeds of discord and doubt to keep the Towers from making true peace. When word reached him of an exchange program between the Aes Sedai and Asha’man he volunteered to meet the delegation at the White Tower and set off, in search of Sa'Angreal, before joining his brothers and their charges within Tar Valon…
