Distinguishing Features:
Even after a century Shaeva is still haunted by the ghosts of her past, the A’dam which bound her and the culture which made her feel less than human simply for being born with a powerful gift. It took her many years to begin to find herself let alone to understand and process the trauma, something which she is still struggling with now, and so there are few in the West who can truly understand her. Many see the stubborn and almost withdrawn demeanour and make assumptions, they protest at her fearsome and short temper yet they fail to understand how much she cares about the people of the world especially those gifted with the Spark Everything she does she does to improve herself so that she might free those with the spark who have been subjugated and protect others from suffering the same fate, regardless of where they were born or who they might become. Shaeva puts others first, often to the detriment of herself, and finds it infuriating when people simply will not listen because she has experienced pain few will ever truly grasp and so she is fostering a thirst for life, enjoying the small things...
Once upon a time Shaeva was known by another name, a name lost to time and left upon the continent of Seanchan. Almost all memories of her former life, a life before the A’dam, have faded away beneath the conditioning and pain she was subjected to through the years but small glimmers remain. Faint but nevertheless warm, her mother’s smile and the sound of her voice, her father’s gruff guffawing echoing around a small dimly lit chamber. These small slivers of hope are buried deep, deep down and she clings to them in her times of need. They kept her going once the Sul’dam tested her and found that she had the Spark, the collar quickly became a source of comfort for her as her Sul’dam effectively conditioned her through the use of both pleasure and pain, leaving Shaeva desperate to please her captor despite resenting the collar around her neck. Of course, she knew (at the time) that it was necessary for an unshackled channeler could destroy everything and disrupt the great order of the Empire with their duplicitous nature. Even one of the blood, like Shaeva, could not walk free and must serve at the will of a Sul’dam.
Shaeva, in particular, joined many other Damane delving for ores while the Empire prepared for the return and found herself in Falme when the war began in earnest. Her Sul’dam pushed her to the brink of burning out during the battle, rending the heavens with lightning and fire even as the Dragon Reborn did battle in the heavens above. When her Sul’dam was slain Shaeva was captured by a small contingent from the White Tower, wandering aimlessly in search of a new Sul’dam to claim her the Sisters shielded her and took her to Tar Valon hoping to not only study the A’dam but to study her. Freed from her collar, Shaeva remained quiet and aloof, rarely engaging with those she called the marath'damane even when they offered her comfort. She barely ate, she slept curled up in the corner of a Novice’s chamber and only in short bursts lest she be caught unawares but slowly two sisters of the Yellow Ajah worked through her barriers, earning her trust through painstaking hours of one sided conversation and often just silently sitting with her. Even without her collar Shaeva would, for a long time, never reach out to the power which confused the Sisters even as they began to understand the insidious nature of the A’dam and its power.
Once the Aes Sedai learned everything they wanted to learn from Shaeva it became quite apparent that she would never be a successful Novice, let alone a full Sister and so they worked to ensure the Kin were aware of her, and her potential, before putting her out of the Tower once they were sure the Kin would offer her sanctuary.
The Sisters kept a close eye on Shaeva for her first few months after letting her go for they were concerned, if Shaeva returned to the Seanchan she would be a formidable Damane and so they were determined to ensure that she would never walk that path again. The Kin took her in readily and offered her shelter, first housing her in Sheinar where a Kinswoman offered her a place in her home with her family. Shaeva and Aluriel grew close even as the world around them began to change and the Dark One’s reach grew longer and longer. Shaeva, determined to redeem herself, stepped into the conflict offering aid to the warriors of the Borderlands without hesitation, she wanted not only to redeem herself but also to protect those who had offered her sanctuary and helped her recognise her own humanity. She offered healing to those that needed it as the Last Battle raged and even found herself on the frontlines rending the heavens as she had once done at the behest of a Sul’dam, this time the master of her own destiny. She soon found that her time as a Damane meant that she knew things about the One Power, about weaves, that even the oldest Aes Sedai could only imagine. She proved to be a valuable asset in the battle for the Borderlands though ultimately just one pebble in a giant ocean of battle.
In the wake of the battle Shaeva found herself working hand in hand with other channelers to help heal the wounded and prepare the world for a new age beneath the Dragon’s Compact, for maintaining the peace in the wake of war was often as challenging as the war itself. Any who could not be healed she offered them comfort, spending their last hours with them and so she witnessed many deaths over the months following Tarmon Gai’don.
When her services were no longer required Shaeva travelled south, avoiding any sign on the Seanchan and Tai’Seanchan, eventually settling in a small village on the banks of the River Erenin South-west of Cairhein. She remained there for nearly twenty years offering the people healing and knowledge, in return the villagers ensured that she had enough food and furs to live a comfortable life. Despite her love for the villagers the rules of the Kin were clear and so she moved on, travelling to reside in the shadow of the Black Tower where she would largely go unnoticed as she continued to focus on herself especially when new reached her of the Seanchan advances into the West Lands once more, fearing capture and sickened by the thought of wearing the A’dam again.
Despite her love of the Kin and everything they had given her she chose to study the One Power discreetly (something many of the Kin frowned upon), looking to expand her knowledge to better serve the people who had saved her from captivity. In her isolation she trained with glaive and dagger, she soon found herself living with a withdrawn soldier who offered her something nobody had ever given her before; love. She came to Shaeva for healing and then she never left again, after nearly a decade and a half together she passed away painlessly in her sleep leaving Shaeva to bury her. For the first time in her life Shaeva grieved, for the woman she had come to love and lose. The one who made her realise that she could do more than just serve, collared or not, but that she could genuinely live a life filled with as much joy as pain. Balance.
When Shaeva finished grieving she chose to travel once more, using her gifts to travel into the Wastes where she spent years wandering with the Wise Ones, with the Maidens of the Spear and any other Aiel who would accept her in an effort to find her place but ultimately she returned to the small house in the shadow of the Black Tower, reclaiming her home mere months before the Asha’man marched on Tar Valon in light of the freshly declared war. Shaeva sought to remain hidden but ultimately she found herself being dragged into the conflict by her friends among the Aiel, being recruited for her skills to help the contingent of the Dragon’s Compact as they pushed the forces of the Black Tower back and eventually laid siege to the Asha’man stronghold. Shaeva joined the scouts, including an Aes Sedai named Nyssia, as they probed the walls of the fortress for weak points when they encountered a small band of Asha’man trapped outside the walls. In the ensuing battle Shaeva’s lightning churned the earth and split the heavens, leaving her and one Maiden standing when the dust settled surrounded by the carnage. Shaeva felt sick to her stomach, for the destruction left in the wake of the battle reminded her of the destruction left in her wake during the battle of Falme wen she was a slave serving a master, ultimately she withdrew from the frontline and joined many of the Kin offering their skills as healers throughout the siege.
Despite it all, Shaeva ultimately returned to her solitary farmhouse in the shadow of the Black Tower where she offered the new members of the Kin a haven away from society where they remained largely undisturbed, akin to the farm they once used for similar means, and even when she chose to return to the Wastes she continued to facilitate the use of her small farmstead to protect channellers and offer them sanctuary, especially those freed from the Tai’Seanchan and Seanchan. While in the Wastes she grew close to many of the Maidens and trained with their fledgeling members until they were content and then she trained with the veteran Maidens while offering them assistance through the use of travelling and healing. Through the mutually beneficial arrangement Shaeva developed a strong bond with the Aiel and an understanding of their culture, while she knew she could never truly be one of them she adopted many of their traditions including the use of the veil in the wastes which in many ways amused the Maidens of the Spear. She spent many days with the Wise Ones, exchanging knowledge, in the same way that she spent many months with the warriors until a small contingent of Far Dareis Mai asked for her aid in the pursuit of a rogue channeler and her followers.
And so Shaeva returned to the West and ultimately returned to her farm in the shadow of the Black Tower where she could watch and wait, offering sanctuary to any of the Kin who might need it.
