As a handsome, flirtatious rogue, Varian’s agelessness has served him well these last 100 years. He has an oblong-shaped face with half-moon-shaped eyes of a dark brown shade. Varian has a broad nose, thin lips, and a beauty mark on his right cheek to the side of his nose. He has a thick head of black wavy hair that falls to his collar bone. Mischievous but with a good heart, Varian is a bit of a playful flirt. He loves and cares for the women he’s with and never mistreats them, but even though he is always a respectful gentleman, he never stays with one partner for long. He is an outgoing, adventurous, free spirit that isn’t easy to tie down. Still, being such a friendly chap, Varian is easy to approach and gets along with almost everyone. This is also a man with a strong sense of humor, compassion, and confidence. Varian likes to be popular and often engages in conversation with those he meets. He has a unique ability to remember small details an acquaintance shared in a passing meeting.
Varian has a strong sense of friendship and respect for his fellow Black Tower brothers and longs to get them the justice they deserve. He is pretty passionate about his duties as M’Hael, especially with clearing the Black Towers’ unfavorable reputation throughout the world. And akin to Jadin before him, Varian seeks to repair the relationship between the two Towers. His other goals as the new M’Hael are to increase the Black Towers funds and improve living conditions, fortifications, resources, morale, and internal relationships. He also seeks to root out any darkfriends with extreme prejudice.
He is a man who shows quite an intellectual side in debate, politics, history, and laws that is also incredibly cunning. Tactical in warfare or battle, he is typically pretty capable of keeping his wits sharp and focused. But on those rare occasions where his emotions get the better of him, Varian’s Illian tongue comes out in full force. Earning his trust and friendship isn’t too complex, being the easygoing scamp he is. Still, should anyone betray that trust/friendship, they’ll get a terrifyingly rare taste of his vengeance.
Similarly, anyone who wrongs his friends or Black Tower brothers can say the same, as Varian is a fiercely loyal man. The new M’Hael also has a tremendously inventive and creative mind, finding new and unconventional ways to solve problems. Overall, Varian is a lovable Jack-of-all-trades that will bring change to the Black Tower… Whether that change will be for good or bad will be left to the turning of the wheel.
In the winter of 980 NE, Varian was born to Toreth and Kelaida Mathayas in Illian, Illian, during the month of Taisham. Growing up in the capital city, especially a famous port city, ignited Varian's adventurous, wild spirit very early on. Being the youngest of seven, he often got away with various pranks and other mischievous actions. He swiftly learned how to trick his parents into believing one of his siblings was responsible for any of his less than savory acts. And because Varian was the 'baby' of the family, he often received special treatment from his parents, who never would believe their 'sweet boy' could be responsible for such deeds. He had them wrapped around his finger, and as he grew, the cleverer he became. He was running a flourishing gang of thieves by the age of 8. But, unfortunately for him, at 11, his parents caught on to his shenanigans and discovered his horde. So for the next four years, he was forced to work at the hospices, soup kitchens, stables, shipyards, and shelters as penance for his crimes. It was quite a humbling experience for him and would kick start his enjoyment in helping others.
At the age of 19, Varian channeled the source when he put out a fire that broke out in the soup kitchen with a gust of wind. Legitimately concerned for their son, considering Saidin was tainted and drove male channelers into madness, his parents immediately sent him off to the Black Tower to receive training. They prayed that learning from the Asha'man would help keep him from going insane or dying. Luckily for him, the taint would be cleansed one year later by Rand al'Thor and Nynaeve al'Meara. Before that time came, though, Varian was taught constraint when channeling the source so as only to draw on it in times of necessity. Varian was taught constraint when channeling the source so as only to draw on it in times of necessity. Because of that, his ascension through the ranks was relatively quick since he mainly focused on weapon training. But not long after Varian became an Asha'man and Saidin was cleansed, Tarmon Gai'don began. He was only 20 years old at the time.
As the battle between the Shadow and the Light waged on four fronts, Varian was first sent to Andor to aid in destroying the Trollocs in Caemlyn. But he would be sent back to the Black Tower after the retreat to Cairhien was made. Rumors had abounded that Logain was held captive, and therefore he joined Androl Genhald's efforts to rescue him. Unfortunately, their party was captured, and they had to watch as their men were subjugated to being Turned. They brought Varian forth to be Turned, but shortly after the process began, Androl could form gateways again, saving Varian before his Turning concluded. They eventually overcame Mazrim Taim and his lackeys, driving them away from the Black Tower. Later, he allowed himself to bond to an Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah named Alia Nilagin to form channeling circles in the battles to come.
Asha'man arrived at the battlefield in Cairhien as Elayne's army, having finished off the northern force, lost to the southern one. By that time, the trollocs dispersed the cavalry units of the Legion. The pikemen were barely holding as the trollocs started to surround the army. The Asha'man save the dragons' position from being overrun and join the battle. However, the war was too fierce to allow for an orderly retreat. Therefore, the Asha'man, Aes Sedai, kinswomen, and Elayne form a circle of 14 women and 13 men, including Varian. Androl received control of the circle, and he created a gateway 100 feet tall into the bowels of Dragonmount, unleashing a vast column of lava at the charging trollocs. After the Light secured the Andoran front, Varian and Alia went to help on the northern front to fight, but before the victory of the Light was achieved, Alia fell in battle. However, she was able to release Varian of the bond before passing. Hers was one of the many losses he suffered during Tarmon Gai'don, losses that would, sadly, only be the first of many he'd come to know...
One year after the Last Battle, Varian would become an Asha'man of the Air Legion. And after Logain moved the Black Tower to the Caralain grass, establishing the country of Caralain, Varian did his part in building it up by meeting with southern leaders to jockey for funds, supplies, trade, and workers. One of the aims of growing Caralain was to unify the people within its borders to remain politically stable and viable in the long run. So Logain took the initiative to develop the community through programs, including the conscription of male channelers and significant infrastructure development to foster social harmony and economic growth. In addition, he focused on the early development of civil society organizations, the capability of providing public goods evenly across the Westlands, and the emergence of a shared medium of communication. Therefore, whatever Logain required, Varian used his connections, charm, and means of persuasion to provide.
In 22 FA, Varian suffered a significant loss when the Seanchan Emperor invaded Illian from the Sea of Storms. His entire family perished during the capital's fall, and he'd have no chance to avenge them. Even though the armies managed to halt the Seanchans' advance, they could not reclaim his homeland. He'd also have no time to mourn his loved ones, for he'd be led into the Ways by Perrin Goldeneyes, along with a team of Aes Sedai and other Asha'man. And through the combined efforts of all involved and the timely intervention of Ogier Treesingers, the bridges surrounding the Illian Waygate within the Ways were destroyed. This act prevented the Seanchan from using the Ways to outmaneuver the Westlands or resupply.
Additionally, the combination of Ogier Treesingers and the channelers does something previously thought impossible and cleanses the small section of the Ways around the Illian Waygate. Still, despite this achievement, Varian had to deal with losing his family and many of his old friends. It was a severe blow that would affect future relationships and nearly broke him. Still, the support he found from his Black Tower compatriots would be the crutch he'd lean on during his journey to recovery and acceptance. He also found a way to honor his family by embroidering their names into the belt his scabbard is on. Their names served as a reminder to why he fights, that their deaths must not be in vain and how he must avenge them.
The Seanchan Emperor launched a third attack from Tremalking into Tarabon during 24 FA. Still bitter about his losses in Illian, Varian did not hesitate to join the fight in the western front. The Seanchan were stalled at Caechin by the combined efforts of Aes Sedai and Asha'man led by the Amrylin and M'Hael. While there, Varian killed as many Seanchan as he was able to. His agony and grief were all-consuming, a fact that was obvious to his Captain, so he was sent away to fetch supplies. Miraculously, serving outside of Caechin in 25 FA ultimately saved Varian's life when Nynaeve destroyed the city in a burst of the One Power. He'd rejoin the remaining Asha'man and Aes Sedai to aid Logain and Saerin in pushing the Seanchan back towards the Aryth Ocean. But it was, at last, in 27 FA that the invaders were driven back to the sea. Their victory would be due to the use of gliders for an aerial attack. And Varian was one of the Air Asha'man responsible for the construction of the gliders, a fact he was rather proud of as he'd found a way to put his talents to good use. Sadly, the man suffered another death, the M'Hael, Login Ablar. The only solace he could take from his reeling grief would come from joining the forces of the southern front and pushing the last of the invaders off the coast. It was a bittersweet victory for Varian, but he managed to find peace of mind knowing that he'd helped stop them from destroying any other lives. And though he brought down many Seanchan, Varian wasn't confident his family had received the justice they deserved or Illian for that matter. Yet, he also knew that holding onto his rage wouldn't bring them back and that if he continued to kill in their name, he'd be dishonoring their memory. So Varian released his thirst for vengeance. He still wears the belt with their names on it, but this time they were a reminder that he fights to keep others from knowing the pain and loss he's experienced.
For the following 28 years, Varian traveled from place to place in the south as he worked with different dignitaries to secure funds and resources for Caralain. He also used his cunning, charm, and intellect to learn secrets that he used to benefit his Legion and the Black Tower. One of these secrets was discovering the existence of an organization located in Tear called The Order of the Silk Rose. Little was known of them, other than their desire to return the rule to the High Lords. Varian re-positioned himself to Tear's capital to investigate the organization further to learn if they were a threat to the Queen. He was able to find one of their grunt members and, by using his previous experience running a gang, replaces the man by completing a job. Once inside, Varian used his skills to ascend through the ranks and get closer to the leaders. He learned that they planned to assassinate the Queen and the Council to assume power. Before informing the southern theater Air Captain of his finding, Varian uncovers the date, time, locations, and assassination plans. Together, with several Air Asha'man and the Air Captain, they captured all the Order of the Silk Rose members. The members were tried and convicted of conspiracy, amongst other crimes, while Varian was called to the palace to receive a reward from the Queen for his actions. The ceremony would be one to change his life forever.
Upon accepting his reward in 52 FA, Varian would have his first encounter with Queen Ienyth Sisnera. Her beauty was beyond compare but was matched only by her compassionate and intellectual personality. Varian fell hard and fast for her, although she was already married. But he couldn't help how he felt, so he convinced his Captain to remain in Tear as Ienyth's advisor. At first, their relationship was friendship and understanding, as Varian served her and the Black Tower honorably. But over time, her feelings began to match Varian's, and the two began to engage in an affair. Neither of them wanted to hurt Ineyth's husband Eamun, as he wasn't an evil man or anything, but his and Ineyth's marriage had been a political one, and there was no romance between them. Regardless, Ineyth knew that her relationship with Varian was wrong, but her love for him was beyond words. So she decided she wanted to get a divorce from Eamun so that she and Varian could be together, but then Eamun got sick. Even though Varian wanted to be with Ineyth, he couldn't do so by allowing Eamun to die, so he sent for a Water Legion Asha'man to heal him.
Meanwhile, one of the Council members learned of Ineyth and Varian's affair and threatened to expose the relationship to the rest of the Council if she didn't end it immediately. Simultaneously, while sick, Eamun promises to be a more devoted and loving husband to Ineyth. And although her love for Varian was great, she didn't want to be the cause of a scandal or to bring shame to her family's name. And so, with a heavy heart, Ineyth commanded Varian to leave Tear and never to return while she still lived. Heartbroken, Varian did as she commanded, but he never forgot her or the love that they shared.
When reports claimed the Blight had reopened in the north, Varian volunteered to be sent to the Borderlands to investigate. While fighting Shadowspawn and trollocs, Varian would meet Jadin al'Vyron and Julian Damodred. Both men were fascinating fellows with unique personalities that Varian found rather enjoyable to be around. There were aspects to each man that Varian saw in himself: With Jadin, it was his courage, outgoing personality, and respect for family, and with Julian, it was his charm, sarcasm, and pride. So it was hardly surprising that the trio became fast friends. And during their time in the Borderlands, Varian became very close with the pair, though not nearly as close as they were to each other. Parts of each man rubbed off on him, and he rediscovered more of his free-spirited, adventurous side. But he was also reminded of honor, duty, and doing what's right. So when rumors of Rahlin distancing the Black Tower from the White Tower reached him in 70 FA, Varian returned to Caralain.
It had been nearly 40 years since Varian had been at the Black Tower, and therefore he needed to build up his network of friends and allies within its walls if he wanted to learn more about Rahlin's schemes. So he started to make the rounds in the training yard to make acquaintances with the younger Asha'man, Dedicated, and Soldiers that resided at the Black Tower. In his process, Varian met Valen Far, a Soldier with a lot of promise. Varian found himself intrigued by the lad's skill with weapons and his demeanor with other Soldiers, Dedicated, and Asha'man. So he decided to challenge Valen to a duel, and though Varian won, he had barely done so.
Nevertheless, Varian was thoroughly impressed, especially when he had 61 years on the boy. So he asked Valen to give him a few lessons in combat while he provided Valen with lessons on using the One Power. And as the two spent more and more time together, the deeper their friendship grew. Soon they became the best of friends, confiding in each other in ways that they didn't with anyone else. And that relationship would only strengthen during Rahlin's reign.
For five years, Varian watched as Rahlin expedited the rise of men, including Valen, through the ranks, especially those within the Earth Legion. So he worked hard to earn Rahlin's favor to learn more about his plans, but the M'Hael was a paranoid and suspicious mad man, so Varian could never uncover more than the names of men in the Black Tower that Rahlin despised. So when Rahlin waged war against the White Tower and Andor and started executing Asha'man, who stood against him, Varian quickly assembled an organization called The Order of the Dragon. Through it, he helped men on Rahlin's hit list escape his grasp and relocated them to safe locations with allies he'd formed throughout his life. For three years, Varian rescued Asha'man from Rahlin's wrath as well as feed information to the Green Ajah about any plans he'd uncovered to help them protect their sisters. Many lives were saved due to his efforts and would afford him much popularity within the Black Tower. Varian also served as one of the men Valen took with him to eliminate the Captains who were loyal to Rahlin. But he also followed Jadin al'Vyron's lead when it came time to take Rahlin down. And after they brought Rahlin before the Amyrlin for judgment in 78 FA, Varian returned to the southern lands to repair the Black Tower's relationship with dignitaries.
He'd be elected the South Theater Captain of the Air Legion in 84 FA after the former Captain retired when he turned 350. But as he promised Ineyth, he stayed out of Tear and would send his Lieutenants or Air Asha'man he trusted to handle business there. And for the next 27 years, Varian would travel between capitals, ports, and large cities to advise various leaders and procure funds for Caralain. He also gathered information on enemies of the Black Tower and assured those enemies met mysterious ends. He'd also uncover two members of the Shadow Legion within the Black Tower from within his Legion. But despite his best efforts, Varian wouldn't get them to give up any other darkfriends. It infuriated him that there were still traitors within their ranks even after deposing Rahlin and many of his followers. He'd lost more loved ones than he cared to count to the actions of the Shadow but with his discovery, Varian grew determined to find a way to shift the scales in favor of the Light. Then tragedy struck him again in 98 FA. News reached him that Ienyth Sisnera, Queen of Tear, had died peacefully in her sleep. Indescribable grief washed over him that matched his pain when losing his family. Although he'd spoken of their affair to nobody, not even Valen, Varian never stopped loving Ienyth. She had been the only woman he had ever truly loved, and now she was gone. He returned to Tear after 43 years; Varian planted white lilies in a field that he and Ienyth often picnicked in to honor her memory.
In 111 FA, Varian would return to the Black Tower once again. Androl Genhald was stepping down as M'Hael, and a new M'Hael needed to be elected to take his place. Due to many of his achievements throughout his career, Varian was one of the prime candidates for the position. But Varian didn't believe himself to be suitable for such an essential position within the Black Tower and instead advocated for his excellent friend Jadin al'Vyron. The man had a good heart and impressive leadership skills and had a positive direction in mind for the Tower. And as soon as he was elected, Jadin leaped straight into organizing a Delegation between the Black Tower and the White Tower. Varian immediately volunteered to join the entourage of Asha'man, who'd attend the Delegation. Finally, things were beginning to look up. Jadin would bring an excellent future for Caralain; Varian was sure of that. But death's scythe wasn't finished cutting down his loved ones well before their time... Before the Bonding Ceremony could be held in 112 FA, Jadin al'Vyron would be assassinated on his journey to the White Tower. Varian watched in horror as his friend's death tore all the Delegation's progress asunder as allegations of either the Asha'man or the Aes Sedai being behind Jadin's demise. Varian could not stand having the names of his brothers smeared once more or to sit idly by as their reputation fell further into ruin.
So with the position of M'Hael standing vacant and another loved one lost, a fire ignited within Varian. He began to jockey the War Council and the Captains and Lieutenants of the 5 Legions to become M'Hael. The reluctance to step into the position from before had vanished as he longed to not only fix the Black Tower's reputation but also to improve the condition of Caralain. He was also determined to find Jadin's killer and bring them to justice. But Varian would be shocked when he learned that Julian sent Gareth Trakand, a Dedicated, after the assassin. Not only was the boy far too inexperienced, but he went alone. He understood that Julian was grieving Jadin's loss, but his error would cost Gareth's life. And then, to make matters worse, Captains, Lieutenants, and Asha'man, who'd also been vying for the position of M'Hael, began to either disappear or end up dead. It created even more tension within the Black Tower as the vacancy created by Jadin's loss was left unresolved. An assassination attempt would be made on Varian's life as he continued campaigning for the role proving the Shadow viewed him as a threat. But the man failed, and Varian managed to capture him. Unfortunately, as Varian arrived at the assassin's cell to interrogate him, he'd find the man dead. He was beyond frustrated that he wouldn't pry any information out of him as it could have led him to the party responsible for Jadin's demise. Still, he had no intention of giving up on the matter or removing his hat from the ring for M'Hael.
Finally, in the Summer of 113 FA, Varian would be appointed the new M'Hael by the War Council. It is now his goal to bring the Black Tower back into order, improve the conditions for the men, increase revenue, and restore their relationship with the White Tower. Only time will tell on whether or not he'll be successful as the wheel continues to turn.
