Rhian is slightly taller than average and has the build of a farm boy. He does not look exceedingly muscular, but he is solid and strong. His complexion is naturally quite fair, but he is tan from long hours outside. He has blonde, shaggy hair that he usually keeps pushed back, though he is sometimes guilty of letting it fall into his brown eyes so that he can push it back again when certain women are watching. His mouth is slightly too wide for his face in a way that gives charm to his otherwise classic features.
personality
Rhian is a rogue, a scoundrel, a rapscallion. He is the first to laugh at a joke and is always trying to lighten the mood. He is quick to shirk his duties when he thinks he can get away with it, but he is reliable when he makes a promise. If he says he will do something, he will, but if he doesn't say he will… Well, don't expect too much. He is exceedingly smart and quick-witted, but he prefers to put his skills to use for mischief more often than not. He has a kind heart and is always willing to drop everything to help someone he cares about. He is a huge flirt and left a string of heartbroken girls in his wake in Deven Ride, though he doesn't seem to be aware of the effect he can have on women.
history
Rhian was born in 88 FA on a farm just north of Deven Ride, Manetheren, a place once known as the Two Rivers. He was the third of five children; the perfect spot in the lineup to go undetected. Not that he was uncared for; he was very well-loved, but he was also full of mischief.
Rhian’s childhood was happy and uncomplicated. His mother was loving and warm, even if she did frequently sigh at him in exasperation. But she had known long before she ever had children that there tended to be a wildness about the boys in her family. Her great-great-grandmother’s brother was Matrim Cauthon, a great hero, to be sure, but also widely known as a scoundrel. Mischief was in Rhian’s blood, so his mother took it in stride.
From the time he was able to walk, he was the kind of brother who liked to chase his screaming sisters with frogs and snakes. There were no trees too high or water too deep for Rhian, and by the time he was a teenager, he knew the West Wood and the Sand Hills like the back of his hand.
Goodwives knew not to cool pies on windowsills when Rhian al’Mathin was nearby and fathers kept a watchful eye on their daughters when the boy came around. It’s not that he would do anything untoward, of course, but he had a way with girls that often led to giggling and kissing behind barns. And yet somehow when older brothers came to call, they always seemed to end up laughing and slapping backs rather than exchanging words or blows. He was endlessly charming, to his benefit and detriment.
When Rhian was a few months shy of his sixteenth birthday, Asha’man Farran Trahaearn came to the Two Rivers region on an errand from the Black Tower. Though he was there for smithing, he was also tasked with testing for channelers and discovered several boys who could learn to channel, Rhian among them. When the Asha’man blacksmith departed for Caralain, the boys went with him.
Life at the Tower was much different than what Rhian was accustomed to, but despite his ne’er-do-well reputation, he was not averse to hard work. Furthermore, it was discovered shortly after he arrived that he had an affinity for Aligning the Matrix. Rhian began spending time around Asha’man Trahaearn’s forge, both out of curiosity and obligation. He was obligated, most often, because there is no better cure for troublemaking than hard manual labor. Trahaearn was solemn and serious; Rhian’s frivolity annoyed him, yet the two came to an unlikely respect for each other.
When he was raised to Dedicated six years after his arrival at the Black Tower, Rhian officially became apprenticed to the smith. His time in the Tower was now divided between the forge and missions with the Fire Legion. He felt that he fit better with Fire than with the Earth Legion, but his talents pulled him in the opposite direction and he felt his loyalties were divided.
One particular mission in which he had accompanied members of the Fire Legion to fetch a wilder from Caemlyn who had been living on the street, scared and alone, pulled particularly at his heartstrings. Though he projected a certain apathy towards where life took him in general, he felt that he had found his home in the Black Tower and wanted to help others who were adrift.
