Distinguishing Features:
Like a proper Ebou Dari, Johar is a volatile, arrogant soul. He’s outgoing, friendly, and genuinely interested in people, but he’s prickly and quick to anger when provoked. He doesn’t usually hold grudges, viewing the occasional fight (even a serious one) as just good healthy fun, but when he does develop a proper grudge he’s stubborn enough to hold it for years. Or forever.
Although he’s combative and can be quite aggressive, which served him well in his brief stint in the Tower War, Johar is inquisitive and loves puzzles. Combined with his natural talent for working with ter’angreal and Power-wrought weapons, the Spirit Legion felt a natural choice. Others might not see it that way, as the volatile Asha’man is a far cry from the typical image of a Brown sister or library-minded Spirit Asha’man, but Johar’s intense nosiness has carried him through with flying colors.
Though he can be a trial, Johar is a loyal friend and is avidly interested in befriending other men in his Legion and other people in general. He’s open-minded and prefers to take people as they present themselves, even if they sometimes baffle him. Though he doesn’t talk about it much, Johar has a strong, very individual set of morals and can be massively judgmental if people manage to offend them.
He feels guilty over his own involvement in the Tower War, and slightly uncomfortable with Aes Sedai as a result. He’s also uncomfortable with people from Tai’Seanchan, as he’s reminded of being forced to flee. Johar is very much anti being-executed, thank you, and he’s sour on Tai’Seanchan as a whole.
Ebou Dar was part of Tai’Seanchan, carved away from Altara by the Dragon’s Peace, but Johar considered himself Ebou Dari before Seanchan. He hardly considered himself Seanchan at all, in fact. None of his ancestors had come over with the Return, after all, and Johar was little interested in any of the Seanchan traditions that had sprung up since the ending of the Third Age.
As an Ebou Dari, Johar was hot-tempered enough to find himself in several duels growing up. He was more than decent with a knife, too, with quick reflexes and quick thinking. His rising star as a duelist fell quite abruptly when, in 69 FA, his opponent’s knife simply...bent...and almost seemed t melt...rather than sink into his flesh.
That wasn’t supposed to happen.
It’d been a very publicly awkward end to the duel, and Johar’s opponent hadn’t wanted to carry on with it afterwards. Johar himself didn’t want to acknowledge what had happened—what could have happened.
He didn’t have the luxury of time to think about it, though. Gossip spread, and Johar was quick enough to flee before gossip caught up with him in the form of armored patrolmen.
Still. It couldn’t be true, right? Not possibly. Once safely over the border into Altara proper, Johar headed to the Black Tower to put that nagging doubt to rest. The Salenas male line, from Johar’s father on back to his greatfather and great-greatfather and beyond, had reputations as men of violent moods. They’d died young, to a man. Particularly his greatfather and great-greatfather, who had fallen inexplicably ill before their premature deaths.
That didn’t mean anything, though. They were Ebou Dari, for the Creator’s sake. They had tempers! Johar simply wanted to put the nagging doubt to rest.
Unfortunately, his fears were proven true when he passed (or failed, depending on how you looked at it) the test and was accepted into the Black Tower. With no home to return to, not knowing that he faced death in Tai’Seanchan hands, Johar grudgingly took his place in the Tower.
He’d only channeled a bare handful of times in Ebou Dar and on his way to the Tower, but it was enough to block him: he could only channel in a duel, or when challenging someone to a fight. This combined with his general mouthiness got him into quite a bit of trouble following most of his successful lessons, and was eventually cured by an inventive fellow soldier, Ilya, who challenged him to a duel and promptly kissed him instead of trying to punch him, much to Johar’s spluttering indignation. He remained disgruntled about the incident, even though it'd worked, but he supposed it was fair enough revenge—after all, he'd played a part in breaking Ilya's block by rolling around on the ground groaning, soaked in dye.
He was a quick learner, and by the time the Black Tower went to war with the White he had been raised to the Dedicated himself. Johar was enthusiastic to begin with, though he became increasingly disillusioned as the war ground on. It felt...wrong to be fighting Aes Sedai. Weren’t channelers supposed to work together? He understood that their history was somewhat fraught, to put it mildly, but he didn’t fully understand what they were doing, nor why, and eventually decided he couldn’t support a cause he didn’t understand. He lent his support to the uprising instead, which was, thankfully, successful.
Following the end of the war, a somewhat subdued Johar flung himself into his studies and was swiftly raised to full Asha’man. His strength in Earth was surprisingly low compared to his strength in Water, much to his exasperation, but his strength overall made up for it, and he had other talents. Though he lacked the ability to sense the purpose of unknown ter’angreal, he proved quite adept at making them himself. He also had some skill in crafting Power-wrought weapons, and in other nifty things wrought from the Power. Why stop at unbreakable spear points, after all? How about decorative things, or steam wagon components that would never rust or break or need oiling? That was much more interesting! As far as ter’angreal go, he’s interested in making anything that he can manage, including less impressive things (a comb that detangles and styles your hair instantly is one of his favorite creations), but he has a particular interest in making things that explode.
Though he was distinctly on the feisty side, Johar did well in the Spirit Legion and had a grand time roaming where he would and poking his nose wherever he pleased. Eventually, his talents saw him promoted to Lieutenant assigned to Tai’Seanchan, and finally Captain of the West Theater. Though Johar would have preferred an assignment with more access to the great schools (and less chance of running afoul of Tai’Seanchan), at least he was familiar enough with the culture to help. Maybe.
He had no real interest in joining the War Council, which seemed like a load of extra thankless, boring responsibility when he’d already taken on more than he’d wanted to, but with Julian Damodred’s ascent to the M’hael there was a vacancy that needed to be filled and, frankly, Johar would rather see himself fill it than anyone else.
At least he wouldn’t be stuck in bloody Tai’Seanchan anymore.
